Brian Houppert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home on Mar. 4, 2026.
Brian Alan Houppert, 73, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Brian was born in Indianapolis to Robert and Mildred Houppert on September 8, 1952. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend, and teacher to so many kids. His love of IU was passed down to all three of his children, and the highlight this year of watching IU win the National Championship in football kept him smiling the last couple of months of his life.

He met his wife while serving in the army overseas in Germany. He loved her for over 50 years. He created a family that was filled with safety, love, and happiness. He was a constant rock and presence in his children's and grandchildren's lives.

He worked for RCA/Thompson Consumer Electronics for 25 years until the plant closed, and subsequently he found his love of teaching by putting his Secondary Education of Language Arts degree into practice. He inspired so many students throughout his time as a teacher.

He bravely fought health challenges up until his final moments. His strength and determination to make the best out of life will stay with those who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Katherine, his sister Carol, sister-in-law Sandy, his best friend Mike Pryor, and beloved dogs. He is survived by his wife Elisabeth (née Bartella), children Justin (Norma), Andrew (Caroline), Jennifer (Nathaniel Chase), grandchildren Carmen, Harrison, and Bernadette; siblings Bonnie, Helen Christine, Kevin, and Mary Williams (Jeff), in-law Siduri Carney, nieces and nephews and their children. He will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be Monday, March 9, 2026 from 4-8 p.m. at Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home at 5342 on East Washington Street in Indianapolis. A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 5333 East Washington Street on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 11 am with a visitation one hour preceding the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to donate to either Teacher's Treasures (https://secure.qgiv.com/for/teacherstreasuresinc/) or Zero Prostate Cancer (https://zerocancer.org/?form=TRIBUTE) in his name. Live links to donate may be found under Brian's photo in menu column.
