LOWVILLE - Rita S. Houppert, 88, died on Friday, June 21, 2024 at Upstate Medical University of Syracuse where she was a patient for a brief time.
Rita was born on November 14, 1935 in Lowville, the daughter of the late Mylan William and Anne (McGrath) Stoffle. She graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School. She married John Joseph Houppert on June 4, 1955. Rita worked at Lewis County General Hospital in the cafeteria and retired as cashier. John died on June 9, 2007.
She is survived by her son, Mark J. (Karen) Houppert, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Rebecca (Joe) Mulvaney and their children, Jamison & Ella; Matthew (Kayleigh) Houppert and their children, Bryson & Waylon; Stephen (Kristy Auman) Houppert and their daughter, Kennedy; her sister-in-law, Sandra Stoffle and many nieces and nephews.
Rita is predeceased by her two sisters, Kathryn S. "Kay" Valley, Geraldine S. Klosner, her two brothers, William L. Stoffle, and Gilbert M. "Gilly" Stoffle.
She was a member of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Lowville American Legion Post #162 Auxiliary. Rita loved to knit, was a great cook and baker and enjoyed camping with John and the family. She took great joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Rita was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church where a Mass will be said on Wednesday, June 26 at 11:00 am with Rev. Douglas Decker, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Lowville Rural Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Lowville VFW or the Lowville American Legion.
Family would like to invite everyone to a luncheon at the Lowville American Legion following the burial. Food donations may be dropped off anytime after 10:30am at the Legion.
