Brian Hughes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Spangler Mortuary - Los Altos Chapel on Mar. 6, 2026.
Brian Edward Hughes, affectionately known as "The Mayor," passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, in Mountain View, California, at the age of 72. Born on November 27, 1953, in Flushing, New York, Brian embraced life with joy, connection, and a spirit of adventure that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Growing up in California, Brian graduated from Los Altos High School and then attended Arizona State University. He later earned an MBA from Santa Clara University, equipping him for a life filled with meaningful relationships and contributions.

Brian's easygoing nature and warm smile endeared him to many-except perhaps during tense moments for his beloved San Francisco 49ers (or Warriors or Giants)!. Known for his contagious enthusiasm, he found immense joy skiing at Northstar (where he earned his nickname), golfing, attending concerts, and spending time with his cherished dogs. A passionate skier since Northstar's inaugural season, Brian rarely missed a year on the slopes.

Brian was a member of the Elks Lodge, Eagles Club, and Mariposa Hunters Point Yacht Club. His generosity and camaraderie shone through in every interaction-whether teaching a child to ski or offering encouragement to friends and family. His kindness left an enduring impact.

Brian is survived by his wife, Molly; his brother, William (Donna), and their children, Lisa and Jack Hughes; his brother, Ken, and his children, Sarah and Ryan Hughes; and his sister, Marie Chan (Frank), and their children, Meagan Main (Kevin) and Ashley Hughes. He is also survived by Jackson and Makenzie Main. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rita and John Hughes, and his older brother John Jr.

A service will be held on March 16, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Spangler Mortuary, 399 S San Antonio Rd., Los Altos. A Celebration of Life will be held on April 26 in Los Altos-details forthcoming.

Your presence and support mean the most, but in place of flowers, please consider honoring Brian's love of the Tahoe area and golf by making a contribution to the Canine Search and Rescue Dog program at Northstar via Venmo @NARDOGLOVE (note: In memory of Brian Hughes) or First Tee – Silicon Valley (firstteesiliconvalley.org).

Brian's legacy of kindness, humor, and connection lives on. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. Rest in peace, Brian Edward Hughes-you were truly one of a kind.
