BRIAN JONES Obituary

JONES, Brian E. Renowned organist and choir director Brian E. Jones, whose tenure as Music Director of Trinity Church in the City of Boston spanned two decades, passed away peacefully, on November 17, 2023. He was 80. A native of Duxbury, Massachusetts, with New England family roots extending back to the seventeenth century, Brian's larger-than-life personality and outsized musical gifts were apparent from an early age. He began piano studies at the age of eight and discovered the majesty of the pipe organ soon thereafter. During his first visit to Trinity Church Boston, as an eager ten-year-old, he was said to have exclaimed 'I want to be the organist here someday!' Some three decades later, his innocently audacious dream became a reality. After earning an undergraduate degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Brian immediately landed a teaching position at Noble and Greenough School, a post he would hold for the next twenty years. Concurrently, he completed the Master of Music program at Boston University. While at Nobles he enthusiastically conducted numerous choral groups and expanded the music program to include the production of a wide variety of musicals. He was much-beloved as a music teacher and developed lifelong friendships with many of his students, some of whom were just a few years his junior. Soon after commencing his teaching career, Brian was appointed Music Director of the Dedham Choral Society, a position he held for twenty-seven years. During his tenure, the group exploded in size, from 25 to 150 members. They also expanded their horizons, performing in both Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall. In 1984, Brian fulfilled his childhood dream when he was appointed Director of Music at Trinity Church Boston. Over the next two decades he developed one of the finest church choirs in the United States, a group that produced five well-received recordings, including the wildly successful 'Candlelight Carols' Christmas CD. The pure tone and warm sound of the singers received numerous accolades. Safe to say, under Brian's spirited and capable direction, the music program at Trinity experienced a true Golden Age. In addition to his success as a choral conductor, Brian also enjoyed a robust solo organ career, performing innumerable concerts and dedicatory recitals in churches and cathedrals throughout the United States and England. In addition to his technical prowess, Brian was admired for his wide-ranging and appealing programs; his insightful and amusing comments; and his colorful use of each instrument. 'I've never heard the organ sound like that before!' was a commonly-heard refrain following one of his concerts. Upon assuming the mantle Emeritus Director of Music and Organist at Trinity Church Boston in 2004, Brian spread his musical wings, accepting interim positions from as far afield as Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2007, a number of Trinity Choir diaspora coalesced to form The Copley Singers, under Brian's baton. This semi-professional and passionate group of musicians began performing together several times each year, most notably during the holiday season. Brian embraced life with relish and gusto. He was the ultimate people person and had a joie de vivre that was infectious. He used his magnetic personality in conjunction with the power of music to support and uplift; to touch and deeply connect countless folks over the years, building communities and forging lifelong friendships along the way. He roared like a lion and performed on the King of Instruments. He was fond of declaring that 'Just one more thing!' would make a fitting epitaph. Brian was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Eileen; his brother, Tom and his wife, Ann. He leaves his husband, Michael Rocha, with whom he shared the past thirty-five years, as well as two children, Eliza Beaulac and her husband, Joe and Nat Jones and his wife, Kiera; four grandchildren, Nick and his wife, Sydney, Caroline and her fiancé, Gramm, Declan and Finley; and the latest addition to the family, great-grandson Weston, born in early September. Brian loved his family dearly. A rip-roaring celebration of Brian's joyous life is being planned for next spring. I was President of the Glee Club at Nobles my senior year 68-69. It was a time of change in society and Brian's energy was a breath of fresh air. He always said "why not" instead of "why". Brian was a very talented, supportive teacher and his love of his craft was infectious. I am not at his funeral today, but my brother Nat , who has much stronger ties to Brian than I, is there. I am sure it will be a epic.

Just a few minutes ago I was engrossed - listening to Brian's A Choral Christmas while preparing our home for our Christmas party, when "Personent hodie" filled my kitchen with its majesty. Singing alone (as one does when no one is around to hear) as soon as I reached its classic chorus phrasing -
"Id-e-o-o-o" - I was instantly transported by the third "-o" to Lawrence Auditorium performing this hymn, Brian Jones leading us at a Nobles Christmas concert. Flooded by memory and gratitude, I was inspired to reach out to Mr. Jones (as I first knew him as a "sixy"). Searching online for contact information, I was so deeply saddened to discover that he had passed away last month. Because I couldn't communicate with him this evening, I thought I'd leave this note for him:

Mr. Jones,
Thank you for enduring so much frustration trying to get adolescent boys to sing with a modicum of energy. Hopefully, you'd take some satisfaction knowing that the penny dropped for me later in life while listening for the first time to Born To Run: Ahh, that's what Brian Jones meant. Now, when I do sing alone, I recall many of your instructions, especially to sing with power and energy.

But mostly tonight I wanted to thank you for the selections of music that we would sing. As I sang along with "Personent hodie" I realized how deeply I appreciated this hymn. You made that possible. My Christmases and those of my daughters have been ever enriched by what I learned singing your choral arrangements. "On this day the earth shall ring with the song children sing to the Lord" in no small measure due to your passion and commitment.

May the Lord who blessed you with music, receive and remember the music and song of your soul eternally.

I was so sad to learn of Brian's passing. He was my choral teacher at Nobles and his enthusiasm sparked my love for music and singing. I loved running into him after graduation and was touched by his genuine capacity to remember those high school years. He had the best smile! I am all in for the rip roaring celebration of his life. Sending love to his family and partner.

I just today 12/14 learned of Brian's passing and was shocked and saddened. He was an extraordinarily talented musician. He was no stuffy academic and this was evident in both his organ playing and singing of his chorus. We cherish his Trinity Christmas CD's and listen to them each Christmas season.
I certainly want to attend the rip-roaring spring memorial event that is being planned. My sympathy to his partner and to his children. Everybody loved Brian!!!

Sorry to hear about Brian Jones´s passing and to have stumbled on his obituary. No matter of how people receive me or perceive my perspective, may I pay tribute to Brian whom I knew as a child and as an adult - a man with a warm heart, scholarly and paternal presence, and a thoughtful and formidable musical talent. He did not bury his talent but saw that it flourished also in other people and church and civic settings. If my memory serves me correctly, he served as organist for a memorial service at Holy Cross in Boston´s South End following the 2013 marathon bombings. May God bless Brian for all his gifts and contributions, and his liking "garlic dressing" and "whisky" something or others. This gay man appreciates his witness for social justice at choir parties, his jobs, and in company with others protagonists for human rights: Peter Gomes and Harry Huff among them. If he had familiar repertoire, some pieces will play in my heart and mind this Christmas. "Sleep in heavenly peace," I think was the ending of a traditional carol that deserves repeating...may Brian´s partner and family have peace during this holiday season.

Brian joined the Nobles community when I was a freshman. He immediately brought a passion and infectious enthusiasm to the Glee Club, which made our weekly rehearsals and periodic concerts fun and enjoyable for singers and audiences alike. He continued to stay in touch with our class during many reunions over the years. I remember one in particular where he delighted in driving his antique sports car (which he called "Lydia," as I recall) to the party, and sharing his love of cars with all of us. But more important, he was always curious about the lives of others, wanting to know what everyone was doing, and how we, as his former students, were all faring in life.

He was a gentleman and wonderfully caring person. I will miss him.
