Brian Matusz February 11, 1987 – January 6, 2025
Brian Matusz, beloved son, brother, teammate, and friend, passed away on January 6, 2025, leaving a legacy of love, passion, and excellence. Born in Grand Junction, Colorado, Brian moved to Arizona at just one year old, where he began his lifelong love affair with baseball.
As a child, Brian could often be found at the Little League fields, first watching his older brother play and later carving out his own path in the sport. At just 8 years old, he would spend all day at the fields before heading home to play catch with his dad or brother. By age 12, he was already making his mark, pitching six innings and hitting three home runs in the district championship game.
Brian's talent flourished at St. Mary's High School in Phoenix, where he earned First-Team All-State honors in his junior and senior years and was named Arizona Player of the Year in 2005. His exceptional skills earned him a scholarship to the University of San Diego, where he became one of the top pitchers in college baseball. In 2008, he led the nation in strikeouts, was named Rivals Pitcher of the Year, and set the school's all-time strikeout record.
The Baltimore Orioles drafted Brian 4th overall in the 2008 amateur draft, and he made his Major League debut on August 4, 2009, at Tigers Stadium in Detroit, surrounded by 35 friends and family members. Over eight seasons in the MLB, Brian played with the Orioles and the Chicago Cubs, leaving a significant mark both on and off the field. He was a key player in the Orioles' playoff runs in 2012 and 2014 and was named the Orioles nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award in 2015, honoring his dedication to community service.
Brian's commitment to giving back extended beyond the baseball diamond. Since 2009, he was a cherished part of the Casey Cares Foundation, where his kindness and gentle spirit touched the lives of critically ill children and their families. Whether visiting children in the hospital, playing wiffle ball at events, or welcoming families to the field, Brian always made time to connect with others through his warm smile and genuine compassion.
Off the field, Brian was a man of many passions. He loved driving his 1968 Camaro, golfing ambidextrously, playing basketball, and cheering on his Arizona Cardinals. His friendships spanned decades, from Little League and high school teammates to his college years at USD and his time with the Orioles.
Brian is survived by his loving mother, Elizabeth; his father, Mike; his brother, Christopher, and sister-in-law, Katelyn; his grandmother Eleanor, his cousins, Ken, Doug, James, Brendon, Elizabeth, Adam, Kyle, Drew, Noah, Robert, Michael, Evan, and Lauren; and many aunts and uncles across the country. He also leaves behind countless friends and teammates who cherished his camaraderie and warmth.
A celebration of Brian's life will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 6180 W Utopia Road, Glendale, AZ 85308, on Friday, January 24th. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a Mass and Celebration of Life to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Casey Cares Foundation in honor of Brian's enduring commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Brian Matusz will forever be remembered for his love of the game, his big heart, and the countless lives he touched. He was a tremendous blessing to this world and will be deeply missed.

The memories are definitely worth reading and cherishing, from the fans, former players, and the friends and family.

Brian was a part of what I think of as my Orioles, the ones that really made me love the game and the ball park and the players and the people. They actually changed my life and gave me a whole baseball famiy, for which I can never replace or replicate.

That's why I stay a fan, not for the wins, or the stats, or the new lower priced food menus. It's to create more of the those memories with the people I care about. While I never officially owned a ticket plan in Section 86, being near the bullpen and the fans, even when there was only a handful of us, was magical.

Brian was a midst all of it. He went to baseball bash, he did all the CaseyCares, and he was always willing to sign, take a photo, do a stretch, support a local musician, or just smile and be friendly to anyone he encountered. His autograph is on my wall, bobble head on my shelf, and a part of so many memories!

It is heartbreaking to know he is gone too soon. I have definitely shed a few tears, especially as mental health support is a cause so close to my heart. We need to do better to help those who are struggling.

In the summer after I graduated high school Brian invited me to tour the Orioles clubhouse even had lunch after. His act of kindness that day has never been forgotten and he will be truly missed! Forever in our hearts Brian!

I met Brian at the 2013 Orioles Fan Fest, and I was smitten! He was so kind and generous with his time to the fans. Even more telling of his heart and character was he dedication to the Casey Cares Foundation; the joy he brought to countless children and their families will forever be his legacy. When I think of Brian, I think of the spirit he brought to the late 2000s - late 2010s Orioles team and how that trickled-down to the fans such as myself. As is the case for many others, my heart broke over the news of his death. His family are in my thoughts and prayers.

We never met your son but we are huge Os fans:) Sounds like Brian was an empathetic, kind young man. Rest easy knowing that Christ is now taking great care of him. Brian´s troubles and pains are gone, and he will be interceding to Christ on behalf of all those kids with cancer. Brian, you are in our prayers and we hope you share our prayers with the Lord. See you in paradise one day! xoxo

I worked as a producer for MASN during Brian´s tenure with the Orioles. I found out in 2010 that my grandmom and his grandmom Eleanor are cousins. I showed him a picture in 2011 of them together. He couldn´t believe it. Such a cool moment. For the next 5 years he called me "cuz" and would always seek me out to come say hello. We never had any social interactions outside of the stadium, but I´ll cherish the moments we did share. He was always a kind and generous person. I just wish I got to know him a little better outside of baseball. God bless his family, friends, and teammates.

Brian Matusz was a stand up person. In high school, he was a fun person to interact with. He had a sense of humor and was a natural leader. I was a classmate of his and admired his character and good nature. Of course, Brian was also a force in baseball - at every level. And he will remain an inspiration too and for many. He had faith in God and his family´s love. He also had a lot of lifelong friends and fans. That says something. His life was a full one. Praying for his family. Praying for my friend. Rest in peace, Brother Brian.

I´ve been an Orioles´ fan since 1961. So, my first memory of Brian would have been watching him pitch at Camden Yards, which I did quite a few times. Wish that his career with the Orioles could have lasted much longer.
Sending my condolences and prayers to his family and friends!

I never met Brian, but I will always remember how kind he was to my son Adam. They met at a church service in Camden Yards. Brian invited Adam to tour the Orioles Clubhouse and then took him to lunch. My son was 19 years old and was so excited that an Oriole player would take the time to be so nice and kind to him. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends. May you rest in peace Brian. You will always be remembered by this Orioles fan.

Brian was a great one. We both love live music, and spent many nights in Baltimore listening to Ed Lauer and other bands together. He also used one of my band´s original songs as his entrance walk out song. He didn´t have to do that - he was a big leaguer! But what a gift he gave to my friends and I. That now is one of my career highlights as a musician - watching him warm up while my song played in Camden Yards. It felt like we were in it together. That´s a gift he gave us back then, and a memory I´ll treasure forever. Thank you B-Mat. Rest easy brother.

Brian was one of the nicest kids my son ever played baseball with at St. Mary´s. He was always helping and supporting his teammates. Truly setting an example for everyone. A competitor on the field. I consider myself blessed to have seen him play. Our condolences to his family. Kevin and Logan Ganem.

I was a big fan of yours. I watched you for years playing at Camden Yards and even got to meet you a few times at Oriole events and fanfest. One thing was evident, you were always smiling and as a fan of baseball it was such a joy to watch you play. You will truly be missed by your fans everywhere. I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
