Brian E. Schmidt, 55 of Carmel, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2025. Brian was born August 17, 1970 in Indianapolis to the late Edward M. and Saundra S. Schmidt Cox. He was a 1988 graduate of Carmel High School. He married the love of his life Angela (Hess) in 1994.
Brian began his law enforcement career with Carmel Clay Schools and retired from the Carmel Police Department in 2022 after serving for 20 years. For 12 years he was an officer of the K-9 unit and proudly worked alongside his canine partners Leo and Bailey.
Brian was an avid fisherman and boater, and loved taking trips with Angela to the Florida coast.
He also enjoyed cooking, playing cards with his brothers, and bragging about his nieces and nephews. Brian cared deeply about his community, his friends, and his family and forever he will be missed.
Brian greatly appreciated the physicians, nurses, and caregivers who helped him during his cancer journey. They gave him extraordinary comfort and care.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Friday, October 3 at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel, where Brian’s funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Carmel Cemetery.
Brian is survived by his wife of 30 years, Angela; brothers, Gregory M. Schmidt, Christopher W. (Molly) Schmidt, Daniel J. (Christine) Schmidt; honorary brother, Greg (Laura) Dawson; step-brother, Andrew Singer; step-father, Gary Cox; father-in-law, Dwight (Sandy) Hess; brother-in-law, Eric Smith; sisters-in-law, Tonia (Tim) Deane and Lenora (Robert) Steele; nieces and nephews, Emma, William, Joseph, Lucille, Elizabeth, Harrison, Christopher, Jessica, April, and Gabby.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Working Canine Foundation.
