Bruce Massis Obituary

MASSIS--Bruce E. Bruce E. Massis was born in Bronx, NY and raised in Brooklyn. His early years cemented his lifelong love of the City. In his early teens he lived on New York's Lower East Side, playing music. He performed with several bands, playing such iconic venues as the Great Gildersleeves and CBGBs, sharing the stage with such greats as Blondie, the Velvet Underground and the New York Dolls. He enlisted in the Navy and served on a submarine, which sparked a lifelong passion for world travel that would continue throughout his life. Massis was known to family and friends as a Renaissance Man -- a brilliant thinker, author, poet, and musician. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his quick wit. His life as an artist and writer continued as he also went on to earn a Master's degree in Library Sciences from Queens College and a 2nd Master's in English from Adelphi University. Massis served as playwright-in-residence at the Provincetown Playhouse, penning multiple scripts and was the author of several volumes of poetry, professional volumes, and columns. His library training was put to use initially working at the Jewish Guild for the Blind providing books on tape for the visually impaired, and most notably, heading up In Touch Networks, a service providing news and information over the JGB's radio station. 20+ years there led him to become involved with the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), requiring extensive international networking and travel, solidifying long-term friendships around the globe. Massis served as Assistant Director, Brooklyn Public Library and Associate Director, Southeast Florida Library Information Network, before retiring as Director of Libraries for Columbus State Community College (Columbus, Ohio). He also served as the CSCC Accreditation Liaison Officer and as a peer reviewer/consultant for the Higher Learning Commission. He is survived by his wife and companion of 29 years, Traci Aquara, children, Colette Massis, Simone Massis, Heather Massis Hendricks (Brian), Eric Massis (Nicole), grandchildren, Olivia Hendricks, Cole Hendricks, Ronin Royer, sister, Sheryl Massis Sanchez (Juan), plus an infinite cadre of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Massis and Paula (nee Cooper) Handler. A celebration of life is planned under the Brooklyn Bridge in Summer 2023.

Sorry to hear that Bruce is gone. I knew him from Columbus State Community College. Although we did not work in the same area, I had the good fortune to be placed on a couple of committees with him. From our subsequent interaction, I became a big fan. When it comes to my favorite people at CSCC, Bruce was in the top five. He was one for the first people I met when I went to work there and he always made a point of speaking to me from that day on. I was impressed by his intelligence, his honesty, and his skill in working with people. I think we could have become good friends if we had gotten to know each other better. Judging from his obituary, we had more in common than I realized. He was a legend in the library field and I have known several newly minted librarians who were disappointed they could not work for him. Hope he enjoyed his retirement, brief as it was.

Bruce was a boss of mine at Brooklyn Public Library and he was a good one. We almost always agreed and he was very amiable an intelligent. He was also blessed with common sense which is largely lacking in many public institutions. I was sorry to see Bruce leave New York when he did and he was missed. I wish I had known Bruce personally since he sounds like a great and interesting person. A huge loss to those for his family and friends.

Bruce gave me my first job in the real world back at In Touch Networks in NYC. He was an incredible man to work for and he shared so much culture and life with me too. He taught a young man a lot. I'm sorry we hadn't reconnected for so many years. Rest easy my friend, until we meet again.

Bruce was one of a kind who didn´t know a stranger. I´m deeply saddened to hear of his passing. We did a lot of work together with accreditation at C-State and became good work friends and colleagues. I can see his welcoming smile and hear his laugh. Sending heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Bruce was a true gem to work with at Columbus State. I learned something new every time I spoke with him, it was obvious how much he cared about the power of education, and his smile was contagious. A whole college is thinking of your family during these tough times...
