JAMESTOWN - Bruce McCarter, 81, of Jamestown, Rhode Island, died peacefully on May 14, 2025, surrounded by family. He was the son of the late Edward and Cynthia (Cooper) McCarter. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was a longtime resident of Newport, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of Cranston West High School and joined the Navy in 1964. He was a fisherman for many years, in both the Newport area and in Alaska. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and brother. He is remembered for his generous spirit and his steadfast commitment to his friends and community. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 40 years and helped many others join and remain in the program. In recent years, he had become an involved member of Crosspoint Church, in particular the men's ministry, which provided him with a meaningful spiritual connection.
He leaves behind his daughter, Simone Butterworth, her husband Corwin, three grandchildren, Sadie, Mirabelle, and Sam, his sister, Beth Mollard, her husband Francois, a niece, two nephews, and their children.
The funeral and visitation will be held at Crosspoint Church, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport RI, on Monday, May 19. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, immediately preceding the memorial service. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather in the church's multipurpose room to greet the family and pay their respects. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 AM in the main sanctuary with a reception to follow.
