Charles was born in Lapeer, MI on January 29, 1945, son of the late Carlos and Irma (Hastings) McCarter. He married Mary Lou Ferguson on August 25, 1967, in Davison, MI.

Charlie was a star athlete playing basketball and football in high school and was awarded a football scholarship to Montana State University. He was injured as a freshman and no longer able to play so he enrolled at Michigan State University where Mary Lou was attending. They married after graduation. He studied law at Wayne State University where he graduated in 1970. His first job was clerking for Michigan Court of Appeals judge Robert B. Burns in Grand Rapids. His mother's failing health brought him back to Davison where he continued raising a family, practicing law and managing his father's geodesic dome business with Tom Ferguson. He began practicing law exclusively, partnering with John Kalo, while also doing Estate Planning. He was known for doing business and practicing law with honesty and integrity.

Sports were always important to him, playing softball and racquetball while also running, cross-country skiing and cycling. In 1987 they purchased a cabin at Canada Creek Ranch in Northern Michigan which was one of his favorite places. He had a special passion for cycling, both riding and watching professional races like the Tour de France. He took many bike trips with friends and family in both Michigan and Florida. He even continued to bike after a stroke in 2022, riding a tricycle when he could not balance on a bicycle.

Charles is survived by his wife Mary Lou, Children Clayton (May) McCarter, Casey McCarter and Caroline McCarter and spouse Robert Wymer. Grandchildren Mackenzie McCarter and Michaela McCarter; Sister Charlene (Jim) Bernethy. Brothers-in-law Charles (Linda) Ferguson, Kenneth Ferguson Jr., Thomas (Joanne) Ferguson, Steve Scharrer, Richard (Susie) Ferguson; Sisters-in-law Ann Ferguson, Nancy (Phil) Kus, Tammy Ferguson, Kathryn Ashworth and Lynne (Ken) Travis; close family friend, Kathy Schupp; many other loving family members and good friends.
