Bruce Leon McGinnis, 77, of Herrin, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Rev. Ralph Brandon officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to The Parkinson's Foundation.
Bruce was born on December 8, 1947, in Herrin, to James Elmer and Lora Mae (Elders) McGinnis. He married Deborah Sue Fleming on May 22, 1971, in Stringtown, Oklahoma.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Deborah Sue McGinnis; son, Michael (Sherri) McGinnis; grandson, Zachary McGinnis; sister, Joyce Daugherty; nieces, Jamie (Scott) Pribble and Robin Daugherty; nephew, David (Kerrie) Daugherty; great-nieces, Kailee (Aaron) McCroy, and Jordan Daugherty; great-nephews, Tylar (Daphne) Pribble, Steven Knoob, and Jared (Chloe) Daugherty; uncle, William "Bill" Jeralds; and several great great-nieces. Bruce leaves behind many longtime friends as well as his beloved loyal companion, Louie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James William (Elizabeth) McGinnis; brother-in-law, Paul Daugherty; and aunt, Peg Jeralds.
Bruce honorably served our country in the United States Air Force, including overseas assignments.
After his service, he worked at Maytag in Herrin for a short time before becoming an electrician and repairman with UMWA at the Zeigler Coal Mines and later Old Ben #26, where he dedicated over 23 years.
Bruce enjoyed attending car shows and collecting cars, boats, and motorcycles. He especially loved riding his Harley. He was well-known as "Mr. Fix It," always ready with the skill and patience to repair just about anything. He treasured family gatherings and enjoyed the comfort of being at home with his dog, Louie.
