Burl Clyde Horner

BURL CLYDE HORNER, 74, of Franklin Furnace, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at SOMC. Burl was born on June 22, 1950, in South Webster to the late Clyde William and Alice Manns Horner.
Burl graduated from Green High School in 1970. He served for two years in United States Army during the Vietnam War and he was a Sharpshooter. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He joined the National Guard upon his separation from the Army and proudly served for 3 years.
A man of many talents, Burl enjoyed music and could play almost any instrument. He was the lead guitarist for the Bluegrass band "Second Choice" for many years . He worked in several occupations, including as a mason for the R.A. Brown Construction Co., security for Barton S. Fish and a commercial roofer for Bri-Den Roofing for nearly 20 years. He was affiliated with the First Church of God of Franklin Furnace for many years.
Surviving Burl are his two children, Heather Lynn (Dustin) Kemper of Myrtle Beach, SC, and his best friend and son, Shane Steven Horner, with whom he made his home; a granddaughter, Jolena Anne Bruening of Columbus; two brothers, David Horner of Minford and Mike (Dana) Horner of Troy; three sisters, Wanda (Frank) Cremeans and Linda (Mike) Williams, all of Franklin Furnace; and Shelby Horner of South Webster; his former wife and dear friend, Nita Lovely of Wheelersburg.
Burl was also preceded in death by brothers Ellis Conley, JC Conley, John Conley, James Calvin Horner and Randy Horner; and sisters, Annalee Hager and Jean Covert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Dennis Campbell officiating and interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
The James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Guard will provide military rites. The flag of the U.S. Army will fly in honor of Mr. Horner's service to our country.
