Armed with a lifetime of memorable adventures and captivating stories, Byron Charters, 79, left for his heavenly voyage on March 5, 2025, while at home in Arizona.
A graduate of Whittemore-Prescott High School (MI), Byron attended Central Michigan University where he received his B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Mathematics and was a member of the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity. Byron went on to teach high school math for 13 years in Frankenmuth, MI before transitioning into industrial sales to area manufacturing companies.
Byron was a dedicated teacher and role model for his students and stressed the important role math plays in each individual's life. Even years and decades later, Byron would talk to former students who shared with him how much he influenced their lives.
As a teacher, Byron played on a blooper ball team for many years and relished the weekly camaraderie with his fellow teachers at post-game celebrations at Carlings. From the outfield, throwing a runner out at home plate was always his goal.
An avid fan of history, Byron loved learning history's more intriguing stories and sharing his knowledge with others. He enjoyed reading historical books and biographies and was eager for heavenly conversations with history's more notable figures: from C.S. Lewis to Martin Luther to Abraham Lincoln to Roy Orbison and to the talented Julia Childs.
Byron loved a good challenge, whether it was building something for his family or deciphering how machines or gadgets worked. Byron took great pride in helping everyone with their home projects. Solutions were always the best reward.
Byron loved to meet new people and discover something unique about each of them. Generating smiles and laughter was a core part of Byron's personality. The more they laughed, the more Byron worked to keep them laughing.
Family and friends were always a priority to Byron: from organizing family reunions to birthday parties to retirement celebrations and even family camping adventures. Celebrating the joys of faith, friendship and family brought Bryon true happiness across his lifetime.
Byron is survived by Margaret, his wife of 58 years; their two children, Michelle and Tim; son-in-law Gordon; grandchildren Macaleigh, Kelsey and Braden; in-laws David and Nancy Perkins; loving nieces and nephews; and his surviving siblings, brother Norman (Marian), sisters Wanda (Richard) and Sharon (Russ) beloved friends from both Arizona and Michigan. Byron was predeceased by his sister Sheila; brother and sister-in-law Halden and Pat; his parents James and Margarete; and his in-laws, Lyle and Jean Perkins.
Byron will be honored in a celebration of life service on July 8. 2025 at Midland Evangelical Free Church @ 7221 N Jefferson, with visitation at 10am, memorial service at 11am and a meal afterwards.
