Byron was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Bert and Marjorie O'Neal on July 5, 1939. He graduated from East High in Kansas City and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corp.
After a successful military career, including two combat tours in Vietnam, Byron retired to the DC area and managed a bowling center where he met his wife, Sharon. After retiring from the bowling business, Byron worked for a government contractor, designing and maintaining databases for a FEMA contract.
In addition to his interest in computers and bowling, Byron was an avid chess player. He also enjoyed photography, shooting pool, and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Byron is survived by his wife, Sharon, and his beloved canine best friend, Chesty.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Quantico National Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Everly Wheatley Funeral Home.
