Charles Walter Carroll, Jr., 88, of Trenton, N.J., departed this life on January 19, 2024, in Southampton, Pa. He was born August 31, 1935, in Trenton, N.J. to Dr. C. Walter Carroll and Margaret Coleman Carroll.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Margaret Rich (Brian), Katie Froggatt (Scott), C. Walter Carroll, III (Lisa), Terry Carroll (Susan), Tricia Bateman (Tom) and Susan Carroll and his sister, Peggy Virostek. He has six grandchildren and a great granddaughter, who were the joys of his life, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He attended The Peddie School and then Georgetown University, where he met his wife, Virginia, a student at Georgetown Visitation. Married in 1958, Walter and Virginia, started their family in Morrisville, Pa. and settled in Ewing, N.J. for 62 years. In retirement they moved to Bucks County where the staff at Southampton Estates cared for him in his final days.
As a blue-blooded Democrat, he supported several campaigns and encouraged people to do their civic duty and vote. During his career he held several positions with the State of New Jersey including the N.J. State Parole Board from which he retired in 2000.
He was devoted to his faith and to his family, particularly his grandchildren. He could always make little ones giggle at his silly faces and dances. As they grew, he reveled in their birthday parties, graduations, watching them sing, act, dance and play sports.
He was a gentleman, a lover of words and good grammar, crosswords and other puzzles. He was fun-loving, knew how to cut a rug and was always up to play a game. Weekends were for making bacon, crafting the perfect sandwich on a "nice roll," resting his eyes on the back porch and watching The Birds soar on Sundays. Nothing could beat a good chocolate chip cookie.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 9:30am to 10:30am on Saturday, January 27 at Sacred Heart Church. A Catholic Mass will follow at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sacred Heart Church, 343 S. Broad St., Trenton, NJ 08608.
Family services are entrusted to McGhee-Givnish of Southampton, 1-800-GIVNISH.
