David W Carroll, 86, was born in Providence, Rhode Island on December 29, 1938. He passed away peacefully at home on August 1, 2025.
David graduated from North Providence High School in 1956, and, in 1960, he graduated from Providence College where he majored in Political Science and was recognized as an expert marksman. He committed to the United States Army before graduating from Boston College Law School in 1963, and, in a unique unfolding of events, sat for the Rhode Island bar exam prior to graduation to accommodate his military commitment. During his subsequent army career, David attained the rank of Captain in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps.
After completing his service, David returned to Rhode Island to become the fifth member of Roberts & McMahon, a law firm started and headed by former Governor Dennis Roberts. Roberts & McMahon evolved into Roberts, Carroll, Feldstein & Pierce, where David practiced for over 60 years. He was one of the state's most prolific trial attorneys in the medical malpractice defense arena, obtaining over 230 defense verdicts at trial, winning 98% of his cases.
The best advice he ever received was from Governor Roberts: "If you want to keep a secret, don't tell anybody."
In 1963, David wed the love of his life, Margaret M. Murphy Carroll (Meg) after meeting at the A&W in Smithfield, Rhode Island. They recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary on July 27th with friends, neighbors and family.
Predeceased by his brothers, John Carroll III and Richard Carroll, David is survived by his wife and his three daughters, Dawn Carroll Cassidy of Pascoag, RI; Kimberly Jodoin of Warwick, RI; and Meredith Carroll of East Greenwich, RI. He is already missed by his six grandchildren: Emily Cassidy of Dallas, TX; Allison Jodoin of Providence, RI; Holly Cassidy of Atlanta, GA; Lia Jodoin of Woonsocket, RI; Eli Carroll of Rumford, Maine; and William Carroll of East Greenwich, RI.
An avid tennis player, David spent hundreds of hours competing against worthy adversaries including his "brother" Paul Wolf, enjoyed raucous family vacations with generations of family and close friends, and ultimately grew to love even his dog, Molly.
He would be glad to know that, once again, everyone featured in the Providence Journal obituary page died in alphabetical order.
Calling hours will take place at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 E. Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Saturday, August 9 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. followed with a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mercy in East Greenwich at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private. A reception will follow the Funeral Mass.
