He married Zona Walters in December of 1952. The couple lived in Norfolk in a house that Bill built, along with the help of his parents and friends. They were blessed with four children.
Bill graduated from Norfolk Junior College and then went on to obtain a degree in business from University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he became the University photographer.
After graduating from USD in 1962, Bill moved back to Norfolk and purchased the local photography studio, which he owned until 1986. He then went to work for Improved Living, Inc., providing housing to patients with mental illness.
Zona passed away in 1991. On February 14, 1992, Bill was united in marriage with Carol Olsen.

Bill also developed a food bank in Norfolk.
His humanitarian work extended past the borders of the U.S., with his photography leading him to missionary work with the Lutheran church initially in Pakistan and then traveling around the world three different times.
Bill and Carol moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2004, returning to Norfolk in 2020.
