C Albert "Al" Tatum, III, 83, passed away at his Dallas home on February 6. He was born on May 18, 1940, and was a lifetime Dallas resident. Al was a 1958 graduate of Highland Park High School where he was a player on the state championship football team. He received his undergraduate college degree from Duke University where he served as president of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and law degree from the University of Texas in Austin.
Al began his legal career with the Lock Purnell Boren, Laney and Neely Law firm in Dallas and later formed the Gulf American Investments Company which owned and operated shopping centers in midsize cities throughout Texas.
After shutting down Gulf American, Al completed coursework to become a financial adviser and was involved in major stock transactions for the remainder of his career.
He was a member of the Dallas Country Club and the Idlewild, Terpsichorean, Calyx and Dervish Clubs. In addition, he served in the Texas Air National Guard.
Al purchased a home on Swiss Avenue in East Dallas shortly after the neighborhood became an historic district. He served as president of The Swiss Avenue Homeowners Association.
Following his retirement, he established the C Albert Tatum III Fund with the Dallas Foundation. Al was active in efforts to have a public school named for his father, the late civic leader C.A Tatum Jr.
He is survived by his brother, Henry K Tatum and sister-in-law Mary Jo Tatum.
There will be no funeral service. But a celebration will be planned at a later date.
