Dr. Calvin "Cal" Martin McIntyre died on Sept 18th, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 83. Calvin is survived by Margaret "Peggy" McIntyre, his wife of 62 years, his daughter Marcia (Miguel) Nunez of San Jose, CA, son Soon-hyuk "Nauki" Chon (Carey Lau) of Rosemead, CA; son Mark (Elizabeth) of Bellevue, WA; and grandchildren Susanna, Kathryn, Maggie and Xavier; and grand-dogs Colby and Meonji. He also is survived by his brother David (Ruth). He was preceded in death by his sister and parents.
Calvin was born on Jan 17th, 1940, to Phyllis and Louis McIntyre, in Butler, PA. As a child, he moved around the greater Pittsburgh area many times and at one point attended a one-room schoolhouse. He often told his grandchildren of how he walked uphill to school-both ways-through snowstorms, rain, wind, and probably locusts, for the privilege of studying. Cal attended Washington & Jefferson College and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Before graduating in 1961, Cal met Peggy and they were married on Oct 21st, 1961. Soon after, the Army sent them to Puerto Rico where he played a small part in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Calvin earned a PhD at UW-Madison and spent over 23 years working for the Milwaukee Public Schools. He also performed civic duties via the Capitol West Neighborhood Association and as a census and poll worker. He was a voracious reader and audited many classes at UWM. Many of us 'enjoyed' the opportunity to let Calvin relay his observations and conclusions on topics far and wide. He also wrote poetry which he was collating into a book that he'd intended to publish. The family will see that through.
St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Cedarburg was his second family, and he proudly offered his bass voice to the choir. This community provided immense support to him in his final months. We are particularly thankful for Father William Olnhausen and his wife Dianna; to Father David, and to Father Ignatius.
There will be a viewing on Sept 22nd at St. Nicholas from 10am-11am, followed by a funeral service. Calvin will be buried at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Milwaukee. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Nicholas church or to a charity of your choice.
