Obituary of Calvin "York" Squires
Calvin "York" Squires, age 98, passed away at the VA hospital in Durham on Saturday, October 29, 2022. He was born on December 1, 1923 to parents George Houston Squires and Veloney Howard Squires. He Grew up in Efland and attended Orange County schools. York married Ruth Boyd before leaving to serve in the US Army during WWII. After basic training, he participated in the D-day invasion on Normandy and spent two years in France. Post-war he and Ruth welcomed daughter Doris, and he embarked on a career as a furniture craftsman, becoming well-respected for the quality of his work. In retirement, he stayed busy gardening, feeding stray animals, and enjoying ballroom dancing.
He was preceded in death by his wife and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by brother Carl Squires (Carol) of Midland, NC, daughter Doris Squires Cecil (Ronny), loving grandchildren Jeff Cecil and Julie Perez (Jeff), and great- grandson Nelson Perez.
Visitation will be held at Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Tuesday, November 1 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be at Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church in Efland on Wednesday, November 2 at 2:00 PM, with military graveside service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chestnut Ridge UMC.
Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough is assisting the family.
