Cannon Nielson Obituary

Cannon Richard Nielson, age 22, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, surrounded by his family at his home. Cannon was a special son, brother, cousin, grandson, nephew, and true friend to everyone he met.

Cannon was born on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 2002, in Richfield, Utah, to Richard and Lisa Nielson. Cannon grew up in Monroe and had a childhood of adventure with his brother Conner and sister Caitlin. He was always happy and an easy boy to raise. He loved to help his dad on the farm, spend time helping his mom in their home, and enjoy time at his grandparents and great-grandparents' homes listening to their stories.

Cannon was a kind, friendly student and loved going to school at Monroe Elementary and South Sevier Middle School. He loved Mrs Blomquist’s class in elementary and the fun way she taught. He made friends with his teachers and made sure to look out for any students who needed a friend.

Cannon graduated from South Sevier High School in May 2021, where he did well in academics and enjoyed being part of the FFA. Most of his high school days were spent making memories with friends and helping at the farm. He continued his education at Snow College in Ephraim, where he earned his Associate of Science degree in May 2023. Cannon then started to pursue his bachelor's degree at Southern Utah University. While attending his first semester, 2 weeks into school, Cannon was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and started treatment.

He fought this disease for 2 years with courage and strength. He was never bitter or angry. His happy smile, fighting spirit, and optimistic personality was admired by everyone who came into contact with him.

Cannon made close friends with the nurses and doctors who took care of him. He found joy in each day that he spent at home, and often would say, “I’ve fought hard to be here, so I'm just going to live.” Cannon is a man of courage, integrity, and adventure. He loved to help care for the yard and flowers, and especially enjoyed riding his lawn mower cutting the grass just perfectly. He loved Minky blankets, nicely ironed clothes, his collection of house plants, a cold Diet Coke, making Lego sets and doing puzzles, eating Raising Cane's, and tending to his chickens, cats, and dogs, Angus and Molly.

He liked to go on rides around town, spend time with his friends and family, do work projects with his brother Conner, watch his sister Caitlin's sporting events, and would never pass up a trip to Disneyland. Cannon taught us all to enjoy life. His eyes sparkled and his face lit up when he shared his special smile with everyone he met. He has a strong testimony of the gospel and lived as a disciple of Christ by his actions.

Cannon is survived by his mom and dad, Lisa (Mathie) and Richard Nielson, and his older brother Conner and sister Caitlin, as well as his grandparents, Craig and Kim Mathie, and RK and Christine Nielson, all of Monroe.

He was loved by many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by many special great-grandparents, who we know welcomed him with lots of hugs and smiles. His Great Grandma Janet Mathie passed on the same day as Cannon.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Monroe 1st Ward building, 49 E 200 N, with
a viewing from 10:30-11:30, as well as a viewing on Friday, October 17th, at Magleby Mortuary in Richfield from 6-8 PM.
