Carl Cortright Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DiStasio Funeral Home - South Dayton on Feb. 5, 2026.
Carl W. Cortright, aged 90, of Hamlet passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, in Jamestown, NY. He was a cherished patriarch, friend, and longtime resident born on January 23, 1936, in Oswego, NY.

Carl's life was marked by a strong work ethic and joyful spirit. For over three and a half decades, he dedicated himself to the Moench Tannery in Gowanda, NY, signifying his commitment to craft and community. He also lent his hand to the Carnation Milk plant and South Dayton Builders Supply, exemplifying his versatility and reliability.

An active member of his community, Carl's personable nature made him a well-known figure in the local area. His passion for life extended beyond his professional pursuits as he was avidly involved in a variety of interests. A fond memory for many was seeing him on his daily trips to the South Dayton Supermarket, where he brightened the days of employees with his visits and enjoyed playing his scratch-off lottery tickets.

Carl was an enthusiastic craftsman, taking pride in carpentry. His skills were notably showcased through the meticulous restoration of a 1941 Studebaker, a testament to his patience and attentiveness to detail. His love for old Westerns often found him recounting tales of yesteryears.

As a family man, he was adored and respected, earning the title of "Grandpa of the year," a fitting accolade for such a loving and warm-hearted soul. Carl leaves behind a legacy through his beloved children: Chris (Tom) Otero of Yucca, AZ, Bill (Cindy) Cortright of Chiefland, FL, Darlene (Mark) MacDonald of Mesa, AZ, John Cortright of Kingman, AZ; and his stepchildren: Ken (Tammy) Lindquist of Florida, Donald (LuAnn) Lindquist of Stockton, NY, Jerry (Juanita) Lindquist of South Dayton, NY, Duane (Ruth) Lindquist of Forestville, NY, Claudia Peters of Gerry, NY, Lonnie (Michele) Lindquist of Cherry Creek, NY.

His life was further enriched by the smiles and laughter of his 29 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. His presence will also be profoundly missed by numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored. He now reunites with his treasured wife, Helena Cortright, who passed before him on April 3, 2009, along with his beloved brothers Bud, John, and Ed, sisters Marg, Charlotte, and Arlene, cherished daughter Trisha Pittsley, his best buddy grandson James Lindquist, and stepdaughter Dianne Lindquist.
