Carl Fenstermaker Obituary
Carl Fenstermaker was born in 1938, the only child of Edna and Raymond Fenstermaker of Allentown, PA. He lived there for the first 22 years of his life. Carl graduated from Allentown High School and from Muhlenberg College where he earned his BSBA degree with a major in accounting. While living at home he worked his way through college with part-time jobs at the PA Department of Highways, the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. and the US Post Office. In school he was active in intramural sports and played oboe in his high school and college bands and with the Allentown Municipal Band. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Muhlenberg.
During his sophomore year at Muhlenberg, Carl met the love of his life Barbara Hanzl. They dated for 3 years. He asked her to marry him at his college graduation prom. After their wedding they moved to northern Virginia outside of Washington, D.C. where Carl had accepted a position with the US General Accounting Office. He was a CPA in Virginia.
At GAO Carl held a variety of positions. He managed audits of most civil agencies of government and authored numerous reports to Congress with recommendations on improving program efficiency and effectiveness. He retired as an Assistant Director.
In 1995 Carl and Barb moved to Hilton Head Plantation where they lived for many years. Carl was a lay volunteer at Volunteers In Medicine for over 20 years where he loved meeting patients and helping them with their appointments. He also volunteered his time at Habitat for Humanity, and Second Helpings and for many years at the St. Francis Thrift Shop where he also served on its Advisory Board.
Carl always enjoyed all kinds of sports, was an active tennis player at the Country Club of Hilton Head. He was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church on Hilton Head and the Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight, Financial Secretary and Chairman of the Admissions Committee. At St. Francis Carl served for many years as an usher, a greeter, eucharistic adorer, and was twice a member of the Parish Council.
Carl and Barb moved to Tidepointe in 2015 where he renewed his interest in playing pinochle and pool.
Carl is survived by many friends, his wife Barbara, 4 children and their spouses: daughter Susan Jones and her husband Brian of Crivitz, WI; son Randy Fenstermaker and his wife Andrea of Kennesaw, GA; daughter Karen Stutts and her husband Barry of Asheboro, NC; daughter Dian Evans and her husband Rob of Dublin, CA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: James Fenstermaker, Kristin Lynch and Anna Sink; Heather and Brian Stutts; and Mason and Taylor Evans; and 3 great grandchildren: Mia and Elana Stutts and Adelynn Lynch.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 10:00 AM at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island.
