Carl Joseph Formella, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and proud Army veteran, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2024, in Canton, Michigan, at the age of 84. Born on August 18, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late John and Helen Formella, Carl's life was marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family.
Carl's journey through life was one of commitment and hard work. He proudly served his country as a radar repairman on the Hawk Missile System during the Korean War. His service to the nation was a testament to his character and his unwavering sense of duty. After his military service, Carl continued to apply his skills as an electrician at General Motors, where he dedicated many years before retirement. His work ethic and expertise were respected by all who knew him.
In November of 1963, Carl married the love of his life, Sharon, and together they built a family founded on love, respect, and joy. Their union was blessed with two sons, Stephen (Theresa) Formella and James (Julie) Formella, who in turn gave Carl the joy of being a grandfather to Hanna, Alexander, Sophia, Christopher, and Abigail. He was a guiding light in their lives, sharing with them his intelligence, his knack for fixing things, and his loving nature.
Carl was predeceased by his brother, Robert Formella, with whom he shared many fond memories. His legacy continues through his family, who will forever cherish the moments they spent with him.
A long-time member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Wayne, Carl's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He found solace and community within the church and was a familiar face to many in the congregation. His interests were diverse and fulfilling. Carl was an avid gardener, taking pride in growing a variety of vegetables that he would often share with family and friends. His cottage up north was a haven where he enjoyed fishing and basking in the tranquility of nature.
Carl's intelligence extended to his hobbies as well; he was skilled in building and working on computers, a pastime that kept him engaged with the ever-changing technological landscape. Additionally, he had a keen interest in the stock market, where he applied his analytical mind with much enthusiasm.
Those who knew Carl would describe him as not only intelligent and handy but also as incredibly loving. He had a profound impact on those around him, offering wisdom, support, and a helping hand whenever needed. His presence was a source of stability and warmth, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.
Carl's life was a beautiful tapestry of service, family, and faith. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his memory will be a beacon of love and strength for generations to come. Carl Joseph Formella will be dearly missed, but the light he brought into this world will never fade.
