Carl Edward Roth, 58, of Pittsburg died unexpectedly Monday, September 22, 2025, at his home. Carl was born August 1, 1967, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., the son of Paul "Rocky" and Carol (Buatte) Roth. He grew up in Ste. Genevieve and attended Valle Catholic High School where he helped the Warriors capture the first three of their record 14 Missouri Class 1A state football championships from 1981-83. Carl played football at University of Kansas as a freshman in 1985, before transferring to the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science & Technology). He was a four-year letterman, and two-year starter at inside linebacker, for the Miners from 1987-91. Carl joined the Pittsburg State University football coaching staff as a student assistant under former head coach Chuck Broyles in 1992. He completed his undergraduate degree in physical education at PSU in the spring of 1993; and he earned his master's degree in physical education from Pittsburg State in the spring of 1995. Roth served on the Gorillas football coaching staff under Coach Broyles from 1992-2009 and Coach Tim Beck from 2010-2019, helping the Gorillas capture the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship and post National Runner-Up finishes in 1992, 1995 and 2004. He helped guide Pitt State to 15 appearances in the NCAA Division II national playoffs, capture nine Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles and compile 255 victories during his distinguished 28-year career with the Gorillas. For the past three years, Carl has served as an assistant football coach and a permanent substitute teacher at St. Mary's-Colgan High School in Pittsburg. He married Megan Saia of Frontenac on July 3, 2010, in Pittsburg. Carl and Megan have twin sons, Ty Vincent and Jax Paul, who will turn 12 on Feb. 26, 2026. Carl was a devoted husband and father who cherished every moment with his family, which included countless hours coaching, refereeing and playing sports with his sons, and all the neighborhood children who joined them, as well as many other outdoor activities like family fishing trips to Grandpa Vince's pond. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Vince Saia; and his close friend, Tommy Riggs. Carl is survived by his wife, Megan, and sons, Ty and Jax, of the home; brothers Paul (Annette) Roth Jr. of Ste. Genevieve, Mo.; Dennis (Cheri) Roth of Chester, Ill.; Michael "Ozzie" (Laura) Roth of Saint Peters, Mo.; sister Marsha (Tom) Wortham of Saint Peters, Mo.; and several nephews and nieces. Visitation will be at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday, September 28, 2025. Service will be at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts on the Pittsburg State University campus Monday, September 29, 2025, at 10 A.M. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 am prior to the service at the Bicknell center. Donations can be made to the "Carl Roth Memorial Fund" and the family plans to create a football scholarship for future St. Mary's-Colgan High School graduates. These may be mailed to or dropped off at the funeral home, 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, KS 66762. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home.
