Dr. Edith A. Coleman was born September 12, 1941, in Girard, Kansas to Hugh W. Wilson, Sr. and Dollie Zipporah (Lane) Wilson. She was born the ninth child in their family of thirteen children. Both parents, six brothers, and four sisters preceded her in death. Dr. Coleman departed this life at Sunrise Assisted Living of Leawood on September 18, 2025.
She graduated from Girard High School in the class of 1959. Dr. Coleman earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1967. She got married to Robert Carson and had one daughter Stephanie while in undergraduate school. That marriage was dissolved and both mother and daughter moved to Kansas City.
Dr. Coleman began teaching in the Kansas City, Missouri Public School District and her career lasted for 35 years. She earned a Master of Science Degree in Adult Education from Central Missouri University in Warrensburg, Missouri in 1974. She also earned a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1994.
Dr. Coleman met the love of her life; Big John Coleman Sr. and they were united in marriage in 1973. They shared 52 years together and raised 4 children. She was grandmother, great-grandmother and godmother to many.
In addition to doing china painting and ceramics, Dr. Coleman was a book author, wedding consultant, mentor, foster parent, fashion show organizer, presenter, and commentator, event planner, and taught piano lessons.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, John Coleman, Sr.; daughter, Stephanie Carson; step-son, John Coleman, Jr. (Margaret); two sisters, Margaret Sullivan and Rose Matthews; two grandchildren, Brooklyne Coleman and Bianca Coleman; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday October 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church. Interment: Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation: 9:00am -11:00 a.m. at the Church. Arrangements entrusted to Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapels. Condolences may be shared on our website lawrenceajones.com

Know that Dr. Edith Coleman will truly be missed. She was a mother-figure to me, full of wisdom and joy. Her smile and laughter could fill a room! Thank you Dr. Coleman for your care and love. Praying for the Coleman Family!
