Carl Joseph Thayer (March 9, 1959-July 3, 2024)
Carl Joseph Thayer, 65, died on July 3, 2024 doing one of the many things he loved, rafting the Colorado River. He was accompanied by fellow rafters, coworkers and friends whom he dearly loved.
Carl was a man that wore many hats: Father, Navy veteran, farmer, caver, skier, radio dj, river rafter, electrician, mariner, geologist, leader, independent, free thinker as well as a friend and mentor to many. He was one of the smartest men his children ever knew. He didn't walk in this world by its standards, he marched to the beat of his own drum and encouraged others to do the same. Carl was a little rough around the edges some may say but he had a big heart. He had a deep appreciation and connection for nature and all things outdoors, things most take for granted. He saw parts of this country both above and below that would leave most people speechless.
He loved his family with every piece of his soul and his grandkids were the light of his life. He retired to live up on the Mesa and worked at Powderhorn Resort, a place he loved coming since he was a child. He spent his winters skiing and his summers mountain biking, hiking and rafting the rivers. He was a man of many adventures and lived life to the fullest. He touched and impacted many lives and will be sorely missed.
Carl was preceded in death by his father James E. Thayer and his sister Ginger Mensik. He is survived by his two children Heather Leopard and Joseph Thayer, his grandchildren Jade Schuetz, Damien Leopard, Philip Leopard, Jodee Thayer, Blake Leopard and Jozee Thayer, his nephew James Thayer and his niece Alaina Goldstein.
There will be a celebration of life ceremony held at Powderhorn Resort on August 17, 2024 at 11 am.

RIP Carl. I'm going to miss your morning snow report and what runs are skiing great. A good fist bump in the lodge was a common greeting. I would always ask him how many days he had in... It was always a at least twenty or thirty more than I had! Every day Powderhorn was open!

Carl was my best friend, I will never forget all our adventures together. We were inseparable up on the ski slopes making our tracks side by side. I first met Carl at Powderhorn in the smoking section complaining about an ex wife needing served papers, me being a lift operator sought the opportunity to do so, so as she was getting on the chairlift I served her, was one of the most funny moments in our friendship as well and set the pace quickly for being besties! Since then we have enjoyed each others company immensely. You were the most important person in my life, without you I´m a little lost and broken....i love you to heaven and back my friend

Carl and his family has been an incredible asset to our E Golden Dr community. His naturalist sage wisdom was always welcomed and taken to heart. As next door neighbors we would always keep each other informed as to the "critters" roaming the neighborhood including Mountain Lions and Bears. He will be incredibly missed in the community.

I first met Carl at the monthly meeting if the Ozark Highlands Grotto. I was beginning my caving experience/life. Lawrence Ireland introduced me to him. "Carl, this is Jeff. He wants to learn caving. You can show him the ropes." Carl looked at me with that "ah crap" look. Smiled at me anyway, shook my hand and welcomed me to the grotto. The rest was history.
He showed me some of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Took me on my greatest adventures. Taught me vertical caving (the best one!). And became my teacher, mentor and my best friend.
I am going to miss him with all my heart and soul. Our adventures weren´t done yet. I´m just happy I got see him one more time as the best man at my wedding.
I love ya´ brother! We will meet again!

I remember meeting Carl. It was sometime around the first of July, 1986 I believe. Shortly after meeting him, Carl, myself, 2-year-old Joe, and 4-year-old Heather went to see a fireworks show in Grand Junction. This was the beginning of a 39-year friendship. He and I had our ups and our downs through the years, but mostly ups. He taught me how to cave and how to repel on rope. I had lost touch with him for the past few years, but I always thought there would be time to reconnect. He is on mind every day now. I miss knowing that he is out there somewhere doing crazy, fun stuff. RIP Carl.
