Carl Wayne Williams, 88, of San Angelo and formerly of Sweetwater, passed away October 7, 2024, in San Angelo. Carl was born on September 18, 1936, in Roscoe, Texas to Ray Franklin Williams and Nora Eva Odom Williams. In his youth, Carl attended school in Roscoe and was a member of Roscoe Boys Club. During and after his military service, Carl was an avid and competitive athlete who competed in a variety of sports. He was nicknamed Carl Fireball Williams in his days playing fast-pitch softball. Carl played golf until shortly before his passing and enjoyed the game as well as the camaraderie with his golf buddies. Carl leaves behind an extensive trophy collection. On June 2, 1956, Carl married the love of his life, Wanda Jean Fullwood. They met at the Midway Drive-In in Sweetwater, Texas. Shortly after, Carl joined the United States Army where he served for 22 years with duty stations in Fort Sheridan, IL; Fort Bliss, TX; Fort Polk, LA; Heidelberg, Germany; Stuttgart, Germany; Oberursel, Germany; Fort Knox, KY; Fort Hood, TX; Fort Belvoir, VA; and in Thailand and Laos during the Khmer Rouge insurgency. During his military career, Carl worked as a printer, cartographer, draftsman, topographic surveyor, lithography technician, and a geodetic surveyor. Carl and Wanda returned to Sweetwater following his retirement from the Army where he worked for Kinsey Printing and Watson Focht. In 1989 they relocated to San Angelo where Carl worked in a civil service position at Goodfellow Airforce Base for ten years before his second retirement. Survivors include his son, Keith Williams, and wife Kris of Austin, daughters, Carla Lovelace of Lubbock; and Lissa Vause and husband Scott of Sweetwater; grandchildren, Taylor Williams and wife , Bailey of Austin; Brett Hillis and wife, Chelle of Lubbock; Bryant Williams and wife, Brandi of Austin; Jason Vause and wife, Jayci of Waco, Madison Williams of Austin, Sarah Coker and husband, Colton of Roby, and Bryan Vause of Sweetwater; sister, Margaret Stockton of Tyler, eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and Mark Coggins of San Angelo will serve as honorary pallbearer. Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wanda Jean Fullwood Williams, parents Ray Franklin Williams and Nora Eva Odom Williams, and a brother, Melvin Ray Williams. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of San Angelo, or Operation Homefront. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 19, 2024 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. J.T. Thornton officiating. Interment and Military Honors, performed by the United States Army Honors Team, will follow at Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
