In the early hours of January 6th, 2023, Carlos Parra, departed his earthly life after a brave battle with a very lengthy illness and an aggressive cancer. He was a man who deeply loved God, life, his family, and his friends. We all knew him as a loving son, brother, husband, and an exemplary father to his beloved children. He was 43 years old.
Carlos worked at Broward College for fifteen years and was admired and loved by students, colleagues, and members of the college community. His history with Broward College started when he was still a student at the South Campus in Pembroke Pines and worked part-time as an employee in the Student Life office. He was also elected President of Student Government in 1997. As Senior Director of Student Engagement at Broward College, he thoroughly enjoyed organizing and planning student events at all the campuses. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Carlos spread his love for the people at Broward College with hugs and laughs, even dancing down the hallways. President Gregory Haile of Broward College praised him by saying, "Carlos was infectiously optimistic and an unending source of positive energy." His choice of colorful casual wear, from neon-colored shorts to multi-colored sneakers, will always be remembered.
In 2016 he was awarded the Vee Severs-Choate Advisors Award, recognizing outstanding dedication and service by the Florida College System Student Government Association.
More recently, a decision was made by the University of Florida to award him a posthumous Ed.D in recognition of his work towards a Leadership in Educational Administration Doctorate, Upper Level Education. Carlos earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida. His BA in Secondary Social Science Education was from Florida Atlantic University.
Carlos is survived by his parents, Adalberto "Al" and Rosa, (Pembroke Pines), his brother, Eddie (Barbara) of Redmond, WA., his wife, December O'Sullivan-Parra (Davie, FL), two children, Mason (Cooper City, FL) and Blake Olivia (Davie, FL), a stepdaughter, Cecelia McKindles (Davie, FL), an aunt and uncle, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two older brothers, Adalberto "Albert" Parra, III, and William Patrick Parra.
Broward College is hosting a "Celebration of Life" at Broward College South Campus, 7200 Pines Blvd. on Saturday, February 18th, at 1pm at the Cultural Arts Theater, Building 68. Feel free to wear any bright color to this celebration.
