Dr. Carlos Cheng Yu, 83, passed away on March 8, 2024 at his home in New London, Wisconsin, with his family at his side. He was born in Zamboanga City, the Philippines, on April 29, 1940, to the late Yeo Boon Ting and Cheng Soon Tee, one of six brothers and sisters. His devotion to his family and his passion for helping others was present since childhood. His first memories were of collecting kindling for a fire for his family during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War Two. He graduated cum laude as a Doctor of Medicine from Far Eastern University in Manila in 1966.
Dr. Yu met his wife of 54 years, Barbara, as an intern at Mount Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee. A resident in surgery in Detroit, he moved to New London, Wisconsin in late 1973 with his young family, where he joined the staff of New London Community Hospital. Dr. Yu founded a new clinic in New London in 1980, where he was affiliated with many area medical institutions and nursing homes. He was involved in many local organizations, and served as acting Waupaca County coroner. He retired from the profession of medicine in 2010.
Dr. Yu was a devoted family man, with a special connection to his wife's family in Wisconsin, to whom he was very close. His personal kindness was apparent to everyone who met him. He was a loving husband to his wife, Barbara, and a dedicated father to his three children. He took special pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored. He was a man of wide-ranging interests who enjoyed traveling, especially though his adopted country. He was a superb cook, a movie fan, an avid gardener, an amateur painter and violinist, and a yo-yo champion in his youth. He loved to surprise his family with his unexpected talents.
Dr. Yu is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his daughter, Camille (Michael Carter) Yu; his sons, Conrad (Tonya) and Carlos Otto (Brandi); two sisters, Mary Usman and Trinidad "Trining" Horrilleno; one brother, Alejandro "Alex" (Gloria) Yu; four grandchildren, Elliot Carter, Otto Carter, Gabriel Yu, and Auden Carter, and two step-grandchildren, Hannah Mancini and Sophie Mancini. He also had many cherished nieces, nephews, and other members of his extended family, and many respected friends and colleagues.
Dr. Yu was preceded in death by his parents, Yeo Boon Ting and Cheng Soon Tee, his brother, William, and his sister, Concepcion "Tuana" Go.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home, 209 West Cook Street, New London. A remembrance service will begin at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made directly to the Dr. Carlos and Barbara Yu Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships to New London area students who show a strong moral character and have an interest in the sciences or the arts. Please contact [email protected] for more information. Charitable online donations to the "Dr. Carlos and Barbara Yu Scholarship Fund" can be made here https://cffvr.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=5851
The family sends a special thank you to the staff at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center-Appleton and Home Instead for their assistance in Dr. Yu's final days.
