Carlton Robert Topel, a beloved member of the Bright, Indiana community and previously a resident of Mason, Ohio, and Alliance, Ohio, passed away on July 9, 2025, at the age of 91. Born in Fremont, Ohio, on August 4, 1933, to Carl and Josephine (nee Stachowiak) Topel.
From a young age, Carlton possessed a profound enthusiasm for aviation, earning his pilot's license at just 18 years old. His lifelong passion became model airplanes however. He was an early adopter of radio-controlled (RC) model aircraft, becoming a master of building as well as flying them. Carlton took home many trophies from competitions in the 1960s and 70s, earning much respect and admiration for his expertise. He founded the Balsa Bees RC Flying Club in Alliance, becoming a well-known figure in the local model airplane community. Carlton expanded his craft into the business realm by opening a hobby shop specializing in model aircraft. He freely shared his knowledge as his workshop evolved into a place where modelers from all over northeastern Ohio would come to learn the ropes of building and flying. He will be remembered by many as a teacher and mentor.
Carlton served his country as a mechanic in the Army, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, a testament to his strong work ethic. After his service, Carlton earned his apprenticeship as a die sinker, an eight-year process. Although not a well-known occupational title these days, it was one of the most difficult and demanding of the machining trades at that time. Carlton continued to work until the age of 75, when he retired from the Sharonville Ford Plant.
Above all, Carlton was grounded by his deep love for family. He married Helen Kauffman in September 1959, and together they welcomed two sons, William and David, into the world. Carlton shared his passion for flying with his boys, with David ultimately finding his own path in the aviation industry, working for Delta. Recognizing the importance of family, he cherished monthly visits to his parents and his wife's mother in western Ohio, ensuring the bonds remained strong across the miles.
Carlton was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen (nee Kauffman) Topel, in 2001, as well as his parents, Carl and Josephine Topel, and brother, James Topel. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, survived by his sons William (Lisa) Topel and David (Donna) Topel, grandchildren Caroline (Adam) Wik, Audrey Topel, and Zachary Topel, step-grandchildren Peter Lacomb, Amanda McGinnis, Matthew Slade, and Brianna Topel, along with great-grandchildren Katie and Thomas.
Family and friends will come together to honor Carlton's life at Brater Winter Funeral Home, located at 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, Ohio, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. Visitation will take place from 5 PM until the start of the service at 7 PM, followed by military honors provided by US Army and Harrison Honor Guard. The burial will follow on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at St. Joseph Cemetery in Tiffin, Ohio, at 12 noon.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Carlton, let us reminisce about his warmth and the indelible mark he has left on those who knew and loved him. His spirit will forever remain in our hearts and memories.
