Our sweet mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend, Carma Kartchner Viterna, 90, passed away February 10, 2022 following a short battle with cancer. She was born January 21, 1932 in Butte, Montana the daughter of Jesse Cecil and Hazel Bunker Kartchner. She married Alvin Al Viterna on April 5, 1952. Their union was blessed with two sons, Larry and David, and two daughters, Sherrie and Jolyn (Jo). The marriage was later solemnized on their 25 Wedding Anniversary in the Ogden Utah Temple.
Carma graduated from Ogden High School and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When Mom met Dad, he was such a smooth talker he just swept her off her feet. If they had made Werthers back in the day she would have had a pocket full!
Being a family of 4 kids relatively close in age, Mom was always busy. She pretty much had to raise the four of us kids because Dad worked a lot and was gone. She juggled so many balls that she could have been in a circus.
She was a great cook and was always making different recipes that she would find in cookbooks and magazines. My grandpa had a "huge garden" and she learned how to cook more vegetables than we had ever heard of. Sundays were special because after church and dinner we got to watch Walt Disney as a family and have really yummy desserts or treats.
Mom had 6 girl friends that stayer together for over 60 years. It was called "Club". They would meet once a month at each other's homes and were kind of like a little support group. I know my mom really looked forward to Club just to get a few hours away from the kids and have real adult conversations. They went through every stage of life together, from beginning of marriage, kids, and life.
She loved to read, cook, socialize, meet new people, and travel. She knit sweaters and sewed Easter dresses and dabbled a little with oil painting. She also loved to crochet afghans and made every grandchild one. She was old school and would never leave the house unless she had makeup on and her hair combed and completely dressed. She was a member of DUP (Daughters of Utah Pioneers) for over 50 years where she served in all the positions of leadership several times.
Every Christmas she would go down to the mall and take a couple of names off the angle tree so some little kids got something. This continued even into her 80s. She was a really kind and caring soul.
Later in life when we kids were all empty nesters, we began doing family dinners with Mom and Dad all the siblings and spouses every month. We made a promise to Mom that we would continue dinners even after she was gone. Family meant everything to her.
Carma is survived by two sons, Larry, of Roy; David (Lori), of North Logan, two daughter, Sherrie (Hyrum) Talbot, of West Haven, Jolyn (Gary) Roeseler, of Clinton, 14 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Eugene Kartchner and Garde Kartchner, sister-in-law, Shirley Kartchner, brother-in-law, Richard Green, grandson, Justin Talbot, and great grandsons, Kaylor Bair, and Max Roeseler.
