Carol Ann Burdge-Tarleton December 7, 1948 – May 16, 2025
Carol Ann Burdge-Tarleton, age 76 of Mamers, NC died on May 16, 2025.
She was born on December 7, 1948 in Neptune Township, NJ, the daughter of Earl and Dorothy Burdge. She graduated from Freehold Regional High School in 1967, then attended Mary Hardin Baylor College where she earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry and later earned a master's degree in administration from Central Michigan University.
She embarked on a medical career in 1972 in Temple, Texas at Scott and White Hospital. In 1983, she moved to Fayetteville, NC where for the next twenty-one years she worked at Cape Fear Valley Hospital as a chemistry lab technician and microbiologist in the hospital lab, retiring in 2004.
She was an avid dog lover and after acquiring a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier as a pet, she became a breeder of Soft Coated Wheatens proudly showing her dogs nationwide. She won two national terrier championships at Montgomery County Kennel Club and two breed championships at the Westminster Dog Show. During her time as a Wheaten breeder, she raised and showed 19 national champions and progeny from her Dundalk Kennel won another 35 national championships. After retiring from dog breeding in 2017, she remained active in the National Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America as a breeder emeritus.
She is survived by her husband, James W. Tarleton III of Mamers; a brother, Gary V. Burdge of Englishtown, NJ; a daughter Kimberly Ann Underwood of Raleigh, NC; a son, Raymond W. Schliep III of Mamers, NC and three grandchildren.
Per her wishes, Carol will be cremated and interred beside her mother in Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold, NJ.
A memorial service will be held at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold, NJ on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 12:30PM. Friends are invited to a celebration afterwards at Federici's in Freehold from 2-4PM. Carol's desire was that any memorial donation be made to the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America for health research or to any local animal shelter for rescue animal care.
