Mr. Charles Cleveland Tarleton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at his home in Griffin, GA. He was born on May 31, 1943, in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the 8th of 10 children. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Cleveland Tarleton and wife Cindy Landrum Tarleton, his parents James Edward Tarleton and James Myrtle Bell Entrekin Tarleton. His brothers, Edward James Tarleton, Billy Joe Tarleton, Euell Avery Tarleton and sister, Jane Tarleton Brazo, and his very best friend Samuel Grice, who got into many escapades together.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary Jane Morris Tarleton.
His son and their families, Thomas Wade Tarleton, his children Thomas Wade Tarleton, Jr., Kimberly Jessica Tarleton, Ansley Love Tarleton and her children, Landon Collier O'Pry and Daisy Mae Tarleton. His son, Dr. Gregory Paul Tarleton and wife Ruth Boaz Tarleton and their children, Gracie Madeline Tarleton, and sons, Travis Andrews, Caleb Andrews, and Jace Andrews. His older children, Susan Reid and Brandon Hymes and their children, Suzie and Sopia, Sam Tarleton and Cameron Jackson, Margaret Anne and Anthony Bristol and Jane Morris Tarleton and their mother Susan Reid Law Tarleton.
Daughters Mary Victoria Elixabeth Allen and Philip Wade Self and her children, Cody Michael Allen, Mary Brooke Allen and Daniel Balthrop, and her children Jeremiah and Mary Alexanderia. Daughter Jennifer Christine and Edward Martin and her children, Benjamin Clay and Spencer Charles Evans.
Charlie was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. Prior to this he was a member of Midway United Methodist Church where he was the Church Council President and President of the United Methodist Men
Charlie was proud to have served in the US Army being stationed at Fort Benning, Columbus, GA and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska
Charlie was a scouter from an early age, he was a member of Troop 10 and was an Eagle Scout., and Vigil Order of the Arrow member. He also received the Silver Beaver distinction, District Award of Merit, and Founders Award.
Later he became Scout Master of Troop 9 and held this position for 25 years, He had 14 boys become Eagle Scouts under his leadership, including his sons Charlie, Jr., Wade and Greg.
He loved camping at Camp Thunder and that's where he met his wife Jane, He and his troop families enjoyed many camping trips together.
He was a member of the Griffin Kiwanis Club for 31 years. He spent many happy hours at the fairgrounds, and along with Harry Todd ran miles of wire in the new Kiwanis Building. He was proud of his membership and with the lifelong friends he made.
He especially enjoyed traveling with Jane on their anniversary trips where they visited Historical towns, places of interest, and graveyards and cemeteries. He helped Jane trace her ancestry back to before the American Revolution, going through many old courthouse records. They went to Niagara Falls one January and it was "closed for the season.
He also was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Barnesville Blues, under the service of his maternal 3rd great grandfather, A. Hicks Martin, MD.
Funeral services for Charles Cleveland Tarleton will be conducted Friday, April 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Alan Benson officiating. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trinity Methodist Church, 501 West Broad St, 30223 or The Salvation Army, 725 Meriwether Street, 30224.
