Carol Vanhorn Obituary
Carol Ann (Masopust) VanHorn, Age 88, died December 27, 2025, in Oklahoma City. Carol was the oldest daughter of James and Blanche Masopust also from Oklahoma City. Carol is survived by her brother, Paul J. Masopust and wife Brenda of Layton, Utah, daughter Michelle and husband Jeff Richie, and Wyndell and wife Marie Masopust; son Kenneth D. Nowlin and wife Ellen, and daughter Kathryn A. Smith of Oklahoma City. Sister Linda J. Masopust, deceased. Carol also is survived by grandsons Jason M. Shilling and wife Mary; Christopher A. Shilling and wife Lauren; and granddaughter Anna K. Shilling; and six great-grandchildren Sam, Hope, Jovie, Benny, Ruby and Ari. Carol was raised in a Czech household, learning to speak English as she started school at Columbus Elementary then on to Stonewall Jackson Junior High and finishing at Capitol Hill High School where she was C.H.H.S.'s Band Queen graduating in 1955. Carol was also a member of the Oklahoma City Kiltie Marching Band where she played various instruments. Her main instrument was the clarinet which she continued to play as she entered Oklahoma City University. She was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star, the women's auxiliary of the Masons. Early in her marriage she moved to Bergenfield, New Jersey where Carol was a stay-at-home mom and often substituted at St. John's Catholic School as well as being a girl scout leader, playing tennis and was also a member of a women's bowling league. She also was a member of the Tenafly Women's club where she sang and performed skits to raise money for various charities. Returning to Oklahoma in the 70's, she worked in Economic Development for the state of Oklahoma under Governor Nigh. She earned her degree in nursing while working at Francis Tuttle Vo-Tech that she used later to perform caregiver nursing duties for several families loved ones. Carol loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed frequent adventures that her kids took her on such as the Mississippi Riverboat Cruise from New Orleans to Memphis, canoe paddling down the Illinois River, a trip to Disney World with her granddaughter and many car rides where stories and laughter were shared.
