Carole Harmon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Athy Memorial Home - Worcester on Jan. 3, 2026.
Carole Joan (McGourty) Harmon, 94, of South Yarmouth, MA (formerly of Worcester, MA) passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Born on November 26, 1931, in Worcester, MA, she was the daughter of Hubert V. and Mary Ann (Ward) McGourty. Carole grew up on Belmont Hill in Worcester and graduated from Commerce High School. After high school, Carole graduated from Ward Airline School and moved to New York City to begin her exciting flight attendant career with Eastern Airlines.

Upon returning to Worcester, she married the love of her life, Clifford Charles Harmon of Winchendon, MA, in 1957 and together they set off on an adventurous 60-year journey. Carole and Cliff's travels as a young couple starting a family brought them throughout the United States including Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina and Illinois. No matter where they lived, Carole instantly made friends in each community thanks to her warm, genuine personality. Upon Cliff's passing in 2017, Carole moved to Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth, MA, to enjoy her final years on Cape Cod.
Carole had many interests in life. Her love of travel, theater, and dance never ceased over the years. Her trips with Cliff to Ireland, Italy, France and England, along with her frequent trips to New York City to catch the latest Broadway shows, were some of her most cherished memories. As for dancing, Carole was always one of the first on the dance floor whenever the music started. But most of all, she was fondest of being around her family whether it was watching her children and grandchildren's athletic games, taking family vacations on Cape Cod or entertaining dinner guests with Cliff. Her smile would light up a room and you would always feel at ease talking with her.
Carole was always on the go as evidenced by her never-ending participation in several organizations. Fine art was her life-long passion and subsequently, she was one of the first graduates of Worcester Art Museum's docent training program in the 1970's, serving as a docent for over 40 years educating both young and old alike on classical art. Carole also loved her time as an Eastern Airlines flight attendant and carried this love on for decades as a proud, active member of the Eastern Airlines Silverliners club. She was likewise an active member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Worcester for several decades and served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.
Carole is predeceased by her loving husband, Clifford C. Harmon, sisters Jane (McGourty) McCarthy and Ann (McGourty) Mathieu, and daughter-in-law Jeanne (Blackett) Harmon. She leaves behind: her son Clifford C. Harmon Jr. of Houston, TX, her daughter Amy C. Harmon and husband Robert Stefanic of Chatham, MA, her son Christopher G. Harmon of Holden, MA, her son Neil A. Harmon and wife Rochelle Harmon of Annapolis, MD, seven beautiful grandchildren: Rachel, Ford, Kelly, Brenna, Olivia, Caroline, and Kate; and one brand new great-grandson, Colin.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, January 6th at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, Worcester. The funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA on Wednesday, January 7th, at 10 AM. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the nurses/aides and entire staff at Thirwood Place and Beacon Hospice Care in South Yarmouth, MA for their never-ending love and care of our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish.
