Caroline McAlpine Alterman, born in Norfolk, VA, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, in
Chesapeake, VA, at the age of 71.
Caroline was sharp witted and hard-working, dedicated in her 40+ years as a nurse to delivering high quality care and preserving patient dignity and quality of life. She served in a wide range of roles, from bedside and operating room patient care, serving as an instructor to aspiring nurses, to developing and administering pain management programs. Caroline held a Master's Degree in Nursing.
Caroline took great joy in sewing projects throughout her life, such as creating complicated smock dresses that her daughter always managed to get dirty, customizing her home with bespoke curtains, or creating special purses for a granddaughter's stuffed animals. She also delighted in gift-giving, often with a bit of mischief, including putting her teenage job skills as a gift-wrapper to good use by wrapping her son's favorite video game in five perfectly wrapped and nested boxes to throw him off what the gift might be just by looking at the outer box.
Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth McAlpine, as well as her husband of 39 years, Jay Alterman. She was a loving and proud mother of two children, daughter Sarah Berry (Walter) of Yorktown, VA, and son Pierce Hubbard (Stacey) of Flemington, NJ. Caroline's legacy continues through her three treasured grandchildren, Braden, Alicia, and Rosalie. Caroline was also preceded in death by a brother and sister, Allen McAlpine and Elizabeth (Betty) McAlpine; she is survived by her brother, Bob McAlpine, Jr. as well as five nieces and three nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Caroline's life will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 2 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home Chesapeake, located at 929 S. Battlefield Blvd.,
