Carolyn Ann DeYoung Lowry, born in 1936 in the family home in the Roseland area of Chicago, died at home in Holland, Michigan on Friday, September 12, 2025. She was the fifth of twelve children, eleven of whom survived to adulthood. Carolyn graduated from Hope College and Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's School of Nursing. She taught nursing at "Pres.St. Luke's" where she met Warren L. Lowry, MD, in 1962. They married in 1963, and by 1969 were joined by Ruth, Laura, David, and William. Warren, Carolyn and their children moved from Chicago to Rockford, Illinois where Warren established his medical practice in urology. She was committed to Christian education for her children, worked to bring enhanced 9-1-1 services to northern Illinois, and served a local mission that served in Christ's name those among us who struggle with addictions and poverty. Carolyn relished introducing her children to most of the states in the union, sometimes with Warren and sometimes solo driving them in the back of the family 1977 two-tone green Mercury Colony Park station wagon. Eager to expand her children's education, she read aloud every word of every historical marker she ever saw, and every word of every plaque in every museum they ever visited, a habit some of her children have chosen to adopt as well. Her children all went to Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where Warren and Carolyn chose to establish a vacation home on Lake Macatawa. This home became the center for many extended family gatherings with joyous memories, and mercifully fewer injuries than deserved during her children's adolescent and college years. Warren and Carolyn chose to retire there, where she also chose to spend her final months. Carolyn was a skilled cook and a hospitable hostess for gatherings small and large held in her homes for friends, colleagues of Warren, and extended family. Carolyn is survived by her husband Warren, her children Ruth, Laura, David (Donna), and William (Shalom) and her grandchildren Daniel (Becca), Margaret, Will, Sam, Jon, David, Alex, and Phoebe. She is also survived by four siblings, Lois, Edwin, William, and Gloria, surviving spouses of the eleven, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. The family celebrates Carolyn's life and welcomes friends and extended family to the visitation and funeral: Visitation: Friday, September 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. EST at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 East 16th Street in Holland, MI 49423. Funeral: Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m. EST at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Road, Holland, MI 49423.
