Catherine Ann Copeland was a truly loved baby boomer, born to First Lieutenant E. B. Copeland and Elizabeth Catherine Stephenson Copeland on December 1, 1945, on the Army base, Fort Monroe, VA.
After World War II ended and her father was discharged, the young family moved to Birmingham and later to Chattanooga, where Cathy started school. In 1956, the then family of five began life in Knoxville. Cathy attended Chilhowee School, Holston High School, and Radford College. She fulfilled a lifelong dream of flying with Delta Airlines for 20-plus years. She traveled the world, visiting most continents. Some of her greatest adventures include climbing Machu Picchu Mountain in Peru, and as an unwitting tourist in Israel, surviving the Six Day War, and escaping unharmed when a Delta jet crashed into the hotel where the crew was laying over. In retirement, she returned to Knoxville to enjoy a slower life with family and friends.
Preceding Cathy in death were parents, Betty & E.B. Copeland and sister, Sarah Copeland Pennington.
Surviving family members include sister, Cynthia Copeland Hughs; brother in law, Charlie Pennington; nephews, James Copeland & Chip (Carrie) Pennington; cousins, Meredith Gadbois & Pen Wilson; and childhood best friend, Harriet Ruble Hendrix.
A private service of remembrance will be held at First Presbyterian Church.
