In Loving Memory of Catherine Kay Mercer

September 10, 1950 - August 7, 2025

Catherine "Cathie" Kay Mercer, age 75, passed peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Mary House in Pierre, South Dakota.

Born on September 10, 1950, in Springfield, SD, Cathie was the second of four children to the late Thomas and Violet Ruppelt. She was preceded in death by her parents and her youngest brother, Daniel Ruppelt.

In 1977, Cathie married Keith Mercer, blending their families with love and devotion. Together, they raised Scott and Shaun Jensen, Cathie's sons, and Brent Mercer, Keith's son. The Mercer family made their home in Blunt, SD, where Cathie became a cherished member of the community.

Cathie dedicated many years to her work at PARS, where her compassion and commitment touched countless lives. She was especially passionate about the Backpack Program, helping families in need, and writing grants to support local initiatives. Her heart also belonged to the Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs, where she made a lasting impact.

Her favorite retreat was the family cabin, where she enjoyed quiet mornings with coffee, and the company of Keith and their beloved dogs. Cathie's home and cabin were always filled with the comforting aroma of homemade meals, laughter, and love. She found joy in crafting, painting, cooking, and tending to her flower beds-especially when surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cathie is survived by her devoted husband, Keith Mercer; her children, Scott (Christa), Shaun (Kim), and Brent; her grandchildren, Jordan (Jed), Thomas (Moriah), MacKenzie, and Coltan; and her great-grandchildren, Ezra, Delaney, Tatum, and Charlotte Katherine Jensen.

Her legacy of kindness, creativity, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
