Catherine A. Michon M.D., 97, of Mount Laurel New Jersey, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia PA. Born on April 23, 1928, in Schenectady New York, Catherine's life was a testament to her loving nature and her dedication to helping others.
Catherine graduated with both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of St. Rose in Albany NY. Her passion for teaching led her to Russell Sage College in Troy NY where she spent a decade teaching biology and shaping the minds of future generations. She followed this with a year of research at Cornell University and then earned a medical degree at The Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Michon's professional career was as distinguished as it was impactful. After training in ophthalmology at Jefferson Hospital, she opened her ophthalmology practice in Somerdale, providing her patients with exceptional medical care along with a warmth that endeared her to all. She brought her skills and caring manner to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and Cooper Hospital in Camden where her work left an indelible mark on the community and her colleagues alike.
Catherine's commitment to her faith was unwavering. A long-time parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Church, she served as a lector, eucharistic minister, and in her retirement extended her kindness to the sick through hospital visits. This same faith led her to a medical mission journey in Southern Mexico. In 2010, Catherine was the recipient of the Camden Diocesan St. Luke Award for Leadership in Catholic Health presented by Bishop Joseph A. Galante.
Her love for the arts began when she played the banjo in a youth orchestra and continued with her patronage of the Philly Pops and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, where she held season tickets and was a regular attendee. Catherine's zest for life extended to her culinary skills. She was often found cooking and baking, and her kitchen displayed pies and large glass canisters always filled with her special Italian knot cookies. Catherine's home was a hub of hospitality where family and friends often gathered to enjoy her delicious food and generous spirit.
Catherine's legacy is carried on by her beloved brother, Dr. Joseph Michon, Jr. (Linda Marlin Michon), and her cherished nieces and nephews, David Michon, Kathleen Michon (Doug Riegelhuth), Stephen Michon (Jodie Matylewski), Daniel Michon (Lina Patel) and Regina Siciliano. Her grand nieces, Amalia, Alexa, Kira, Camille, and Robin, will forever hold onto the memories of their kind, loving and generous aunt.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Thursday September 11 at St. Joan of Arc Church, 100 Willow Bend Rd, Marlton NJ 08053. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am at the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 240 Lower Landing Rd, Blackwood NJ 08012.
