Catherine Anne Powers, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in
Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, on October 22, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on January 8, 1948, in Wellsville, New York, Catherine was the cherished daughter of Clyde and Elaine Cornelius.
Catherine married the love of her life, James Ronnie Powers, on November 13, 1965, in Togo, Minnesota, and they shared a bond that lasted for 60 years, filled with unwavering love and adventure. They created a family and a home in Cook, Minnesota, filled with laughter, music, and warmth. Catherine was preceded in death by James, her beloved husband, and is survived by her three children: Kelly (Michael) Ratai, James (Renee) Powers, and Kathleen Posey.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Michael (Heidi Hutter) McClain, Jessica McNiff, Brianna McClain, Ian (Alexis) McNiff, Jace Ratai, Lucas Ratai, Logan Ratai, Niles Powers, Madeline (Zac) Topping, Jamie (Charles Schanlaub) Posey, and Max Posey. In addition, she was a proud great-grandmother to Rileigh Grant, Charleigh Sterzinger, Adrian McNiff, Aria McNiff, Avie McNiff, Oliver Topping, Odin Topping, Eden Topping, Emily Schanlaub, Katie Schanlaub, Cody Schanlaub, Colten Posey, and Baby Posey on the way.
Catherine was not only a devoted family member but also a vibrant part of her community. Catherine's life was a testament to love, service, and family. In her early years, she dedicated her time to mission work, serving the Lord with a joyful heart. She was known for her love of children, which inspired her to teach Sunday School and play piano for church services. Her passion extended to directing children's musical theater, where her love for the arts and nurturing spirit shone brightly. Even in her later years, when her health declined, Catherine maintained her strong faith and connection to the Lord, holding daily devotionals with her best friend and roommate at her facility.
Catherine's hobbies reflected her zest for life. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, fishing, blueberry picking, and canning the fruits of her labor. Some of her fondest memories were made while exploring the Superstition Mountains of Arizona with friends Bob and Ruth, where they panned for gold. However, no place captured her heart quite like Thistledew Campground, where she and Jim not only spent countless joyful seasons but also decided to rest their ashes together upon their passing.
Catherine was known for her unique sense of humor and boundless love for her grandchildren. Whether she was fishing, camping, or simply enjoying life, she ensured her grandchildren were always either by her side or in her stories. Her home was filled with laughter, her angelic song, and the joy of playful pranks that kept everyone on their toes. She could be known to feign an injury or memory loss just for the giggles of watching the shock on everyone's faces. She had a remarkable gift for making anyone feel special, whether she was serving her famous meals or engaging in friendly card games and Bingo tournaments at her residence. She truly loved the staff who cared for her and often said she felt God had blessed her on the day she moved in. Catherine's laughter was contagious, and her spirit will resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Catherine preferred a private gathering where her ashes will be scattered, along with those of her beloved husband, at Thistledew Campground in the summer of 2026.
Catherine Anne Powers leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. She often felt her place in this world was small, but little did she know, when she touched a life it changed forever and the ripples of her faith and kindness will extend far beyond her days. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. The world has lost a shining light, but her spirit will continue to inspire and warm the hearts of those who carry her memory forward.
