Catherine Spiro Obituary
Cathie was born in Detroit and grew up in a Greek household and celebrated her Greek heritage which was an important part of her life. At a young age, she became bilingual and crossed the Atlantic Ocean by boat and moved to Greece for a few years with her family. She later returned to Detroit area for school and excelled in academics. She was selected to attend Cass Tech, studying art. In the home we grew up in, our mom hand painted several murals all over the walls.
Cathie had many talents – she played the guitar and piano, could paint and draw, started writing a novel and was exceptional with words, and loved to dance. She was uniquely gifted in the ability to connect with others and create communities. She welcomed everyone with open arms and loved to be with people. She was called Chatty Cathie for a reason! She enjoyed socializing and hosting people at our home. Our house was always full of friends and family and was a very lively epicenter of companionship. She always had a hug and a big batch of food ready for anyone who walked in the door. She welcomed all. She was the definition of "Greek Hospitality" and spirit.
Cathie was an incredible mom and wife. She was always doing special things to create experiences for our family. Every Christmas, she would create a beautiful Christmas breakfast with a themed set table and a handwritten, thoughtful note for each person, which was a special tradition. She used to be a travel agent and crafted the most amazing family trips. One year, we were able to get into the new Islands of Adventure theme park at Universal Studios for a soft opening before it opened to the public. There were only a few people there, so we could just stay on the rollercoasters and just ride them until we felt like getting off. As a kid, this was a dream come true! Again in her spirit of connecting, these trips were often with many other families and were always a blast.
Later in life, our mom enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers, hanging out with the Kouklas, and chatting with her vast network of friends across the world on her computer. She adored being a Yiayia (Greek grandma) and spending time with Eddie and Vienna. Every day, she watched videos of the grandkids on repeat and enjoyed our trips to the Yates Cider Mill whenever the grandkids came to visit Michigan.
She loved many other things like trips to Grand Bend Ontario, parties, and Greek dancing. She watched The Proposal and Sweet Home Alabama constantly the past few years, and we all shared many laughs.
Loving wife of Theodore for 44 years. Dear mother of Nikolas Spiro and Olivia Bryant (Michael). Caring grandmother to Edward and Vienna Bryant.
We will always feel blessed to have had such an amazing wife and mom who was caring, generous, creative, and spiritual. She taught us about charity and helping others and most importantly how to cherish family and friends.
