William SPIRO Obituary

SPIRO, William Louis Of Medford, formerly of Boston's West End and Somerville, passed away on August 25, at the age of 92. He attended Somerville High School and was a graduate of Boston University. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and later worked in finance.

He was the husband of Anastasia (Thanas) Spiro; and father of Dr. Debra Spiro-Allen and her husband, Dr. Mark Allen of Troy, NY, David William Spiro of Medford, MA and Kristin Spiro Ragucci and her husband, Dr. John A. Ragucci of Tewksbury, MA. Grandfather to Rachel, Felicia, Gianna and John Ragucci. Brother of Ellen C. Benson of Hingham, MA. Son of the late Louis Spiro and Constance (Viso) Spiro of Albania.

Bill was a member of Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral of South Boston, where he served as choir director for over 50 years. He shared his passion for music and singing with his children and took great pleasure in their musical accomplishments. He was devoted to his family and they were his greatest pleasure.

He was always available to provide wise guidance and counsel. The beach was his happy place, and he liked to share the sun, surf and ice cream with his children and grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Baba." He always had time for them and was proud of each and every one. Bill was also a loving dog dad to Vasili; as well as the late Jufka, Gezim, Li Li and Thanasi.

Visiting Hours will be on Saturday, August 30, 2–3:30PM, followed by prayers at 3:30PM, at Saint George Cathedral, 523 E. Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127.

Donations can be made in his memory to the St. George Cathedral Building Fund or the charity of your choice.

I worked with Bill for many years at GSA Boston when he was the director of budget and I was in the finance division. Our offices worked very closely together and he was also very friendly with my boss. I always enjoyed our interactions. He was a smart, savvy budget guy and he loved to share his financial knowledge. He was also a very dapper dresser and he was always so well put together.

Coincidentally we also lived near each other, so I would occasionally run into him at different places in Medford after he retired. It's been many years since I last saw him. He was sitting with a group of mall walkers outside of McDonald's at the former Meadow Glen Mall enjoying a cup of coffee and boisterous conversation. He was definitely in his element. Bill loved to chitchat and he always had some words of wisdom to share. He had such a memorable chuckle and he laughed easily and smiled often. I have fond memories of Bill.

My condolences to Bill's family and friends. He was a truly nice guy.

Although, we never met Bill in person, I met your son decades ago back in Boston at Harvard. He was the most capable and most pleasant administrator assistant I ever had (and I had quite a few through my career). It was not a task that he couldn't do. Through his wit, extraordinary ability, love of music, and smarts, I met you and Thana. You both did an amazing job raising David and by extension your other children. And I know how proud you are about them and they about you. Congratulations and rest in peace!
