Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vander Plaat Funeral Home - Wyckoff on Feb. 11, 2023.
Catherine L. Vitale Sorrentino, given by God on January 21, 1933, was returned to God at age 90 on February 6, 2023, surrounded by family. A loving, devoted and faithful Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Catherine will be greatly missed by many.
Born to former mayor of Wyckoff Edmund Aldous and mother Mabel Aldous, Catherine was the 2nd of five Aldous children raised in Wyckoff. Pre-deceasing Catherine are her first husband, Thomas N. Vitale Sr. and her second husband, Carl Sorrentino. With Tom, Catherine gave birth to and raised her 5 children: Catherine Cermack, Thomas N. Vitale Jr., John Vitale, Vincent Vitale and Lisa Cermack.
Catherine was a devout Catholic with deep religious beliefs. She was all in for her family and her happiest times were spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her interests were varied and avid: tending to her garden (making her a pioneer in the farm to table menu concept), canning fruits and vegetables, reading books and discussing in book groups, singing in the church choir, a member of the Wyckoff Seniors, knitting clothes and rugs for her offspring, and enjoying Sundaysupper at one of her children's homes. Catherine also returned to the workforce in the 1990's, employed by the Valley National Bank as a mortgage administrator until retirement age.
While Catherine now departs us for Heaven, she leaves as her gift to us her surviving family: sister Anne Gaugler; sister Mary Wolons and brother in law Joe Wolons; sister in law Mary Aldous; daughter Catherine Cermack (nee Vitale) and granddaughter Meghan Cermack; son Tommy Vitale and grandchildren Angelique Tuthill and Danny Vitale; son Johnny Vitale and daughter in law Nancy Vitale, and grandchildren Amanda Martinez, Liz Turner, and Vicky Hawley; son Vinnie Vitale and daughter in law Chris Vitale, and grandchildren Regina Hagemann, Vinnie Vitale Jr. and Michael Vitale; and daughter Lisa Cermack (nee Vitale) and son in law Sam Cermack, and grandchildren Dan Cermack, Matt Cermack, Sammy Interlicchio and Hannah Cermack. Catherine was pre-deceased by brother Ed Aldous, sister Barbara Walsh, brother in law Cliff Walsh, brother in law Hank Gaugler and grandson Thomas John Vitale. Catherine also leaves us as the proud great grandmother to 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, February 12 at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on
Monday, February 13 at the Church of the Nativity, www.nativitynj.org, 315 Prospect St.,
Midland Park, NJ. Burial following Mass and repast will be private.
