Sidney-Cathy Seluke passed away peacefully at home in Sidney, Maine, on August 3, 2025, at the age of 73. Cathy was born on February 9, 1952, in Caribou, Maine. Cathy faced her eight-year journey with ovarian cancer with remarkable resilience and positivity. She passed after her long illness with her beloved husband Bill at her side.
A dedicated nurse, Cathy earned both her LPN and RN degrees from the University of Maine Nursing School. She spent 45 years at MaineGeneral Health, serving in various departments until her illness no longer allowed. Her commitment to caring for others left a lasting mark on colleagues and patients alike. Her family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from Cathy's friends and coworkers and giving special thanks to Rosey Caporale for friendship throughout Cathy's life and illness.
For 43 years, Cathy was married to the love of her life, her husband, William "Bill" Seluke. Her extended family includes brother-in-law Michael Seluke; niece Gretchen Seluke ; brother-in-law Paul Seluke; sister-in-law Pam Seluke and her husband. sister Sharon (Lovely) Lambert; brother-in-law Michael Lambert; niece Nicole Lambert; and nephew Kyle Lambert.
Traveling and reading brought happiness to Cathy's soul. She had an incredible mind and could answer every question on "Jeopardy" instantly. a lifelong lover of animals, she and Bill rescued many dogs and cats over the years. In recent years she joined "Love on a Leash" that trained her along with her most recent rescue dog Coraline to visit libraries in the area to read to children. Her passion for genealogy led to a headstone dedication In July 2024, honoring the Conroy ancestors buried in South Portland, a result of years of meticulous research tracing their emigration from County Galway to Ellis Island in 1851. Two unforgettable trips taken to Ireland in 2017 and 2018 with family members including her Conroy cousins cemented her love for Ireland's people and her Irish heritage. Her favorite holiday was Halloween, and her house was a beacon for the neighborhood kids as she dressed up (sometimes as Glinda the Good Witch), decorated the front steps with ghosts, smoking cauldrons, and gave out individual bags of treats.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ethel M. (Conroy) Lovely and Robert A. Lovely of Oakland, Maine.
Cathy was an amazingly strong person. She was warm, kind, intelligent and caring, and a beautiful human being. She will never be forgotten by friends and family who will miss her deeply.
A Celebration of Life honoring Cathy will be held at a later date.
