Cecil L. Barreras, a cherished soul known for his loving nature, kind heart, and wise spirit, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his mother Rose Padilla and daughter Joanna Barreras.

Cecil is survived by his great-grandfather Paul W. Vainio, father Cecil L. Barreras, Sr., wife Donna Barreras, brothers: Leonardo M. Barreras, Julian R. Barreras, Emmanuel Barreras, Clarence Valdez, Jimmy Garces, George Bustamante, sisters: Judy Greene, Cecelia Araica, children: Leatta Barreras, Cecil F. Barreras, Melissa Barreras, Cecil D. Barreras, and 13 grandchildren.

Born on March 26, 1964, in the same vibrant city, Cecil's journey was one marked by passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his family and personal growth.

Cecil's passion for lowriders was more than just a hobby—it was a way of life. He found immense joy in fixing up these classic vehicles, cruising the streets of Albuquerque with pride, and adding to his impressive collection. His love for the culture connected him deeply with his community, where he was known for his gleaming smile and the roar of his engines.

An athlete at heart, Cecil excelled in the ring as a boxer and on the court as a basketball player. His competitive spirit was matched only by his loyalty to his favorite teams—the Raiders in football and the Celtics in basketball. Friends and family would often gather around the TV, cheering and celebrating every play, with Cecil at the center of the excitement.

However, Cecil's most significant and personal triumph was his courageous battle to get clean and sober. For over 38 years, he maintained his sobriety, a testament to his strength and determination. This victory allowed him to be fully present for those he loved, especially his grandchildren. They were, without question, the light of his life. As a grandfather, he was unparalleled, sharing his infectious smile, boundless energy, and enduring love with each of them.

Cecil's wisdom and joy for life extended into the kitchen, where he crafted his famous green chile stew. Family gatherings were made more memorable by the aroma and taste of his signature dish.

Those who knew Cecil will remember him as a man who faced life's challenges with a smile that could light up a room. His laughter was a melody that resonated in the hearts of many, and his presence was a comfort to all who were lucky enough to experience it. Cecil's legacy is one of love, transformation, and the sheer power of a positive attitude.

As we bid farewell to Cecil L. Barreras, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and joy. His story is one that will continue to inspire and guide us. Cecil's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved him, and his spirit will continue to cruise the streets of Albuquerque, carried on by the lowriders he adored and the family he so deeply cherished.
