Cecil Elizabeth Mays, aged 82, passed away peacefully in her home on February 9, 2026. Ms. Mays was a beloved member of the Norfolk Academy faculty for 43 years and was passionate about the power of language as the pathway to cultural knowledge and understanding. Her classroom was a place where students learned the fundamentals of language, literature, art, music, movies, and more.
Cecil Mays was born on January 17, 1944 in Virginia to William "Bill" and Charlotte Mays. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from James Madison University (formerly James Madison College) and Master of Education Degree from the University of Virginia. Cecil began her teaching career in Suffolk Public Schools before joining the faculty of Norfolk Academy.
She was a proponent of "experiential learning" and founded the German Exchange with her friend and colleague Frau Katherine Holmes. Through the German Exchange program, they led students on month-long European backpacking trips to explore art and culture. Generosity governed her actions and she had an eagle eye for students in need, whether it be additional guidance or financial support. She quietly gave donations to make it possible for students to purchase school supplies, sports equipment, or to participate in an Exchange trip. Cecil Mays will always be remembered for her quick wit and generosity.
She is preceded in death by companion Katherine Holmes, parents William and Charlotte Mays, brothers Thomas Mays and James Mays, and nephew Robert Mays. She is survived by sister-in-law Andrea Mays (spouse Robert Coggan), nephew Rich Mays (spouse Lisa Mays) and niece Laura Mills (spouse Jonathan Mills).
A shared memorial service for Cecil Mays and Katherine Holmes will be held on April 11, 2026 at 10:00 am. Service will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory located at 5033 Rouse Dr.,
Virginia Beach, VA 23462. There will be a private ceremony at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Rockingham County, Virginia at a later date and time.
