Keith Edward Carpenter

August 19, 1956 – March 7, 2026

Keith Edward Carpenter of Alexandria, VA, passed away Saturday, March 7. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jennifer Carpenter; children Christopher, Patrick, and Catherine; sister Mary Gavigan of Lovettsville, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and faithful feline companions Duncan ("Chonk"), Guinness and Cash. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marianne Carpenter, and sister Ines Carpenter.

Keith was born in New York City and spent his early years as a "Navy brat," living in Japan, the Panama Canal Zone, and Virginia Beach before moving to Herndon, Virginia, where he graduated from Herndon High School. He earned his B.A. from Columbia University, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1978 and his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1984. He retired from the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2023 after 35 years of service.

Keith met Jennifer in November 1996 at an event at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. When he didn't ask her out then, she started dating someone else. When they re-met in May 1997, he didn't make the same mistake again. They were married on September 1, 2001. Keith loved music, literature, the beach, and old TV shows of the Andy of Mayberry ilk. (Jennifer didn't quite get it.) He had hoped to become a teacher in his retirement but declining health made that difficult to pursue, so he looked for other ways to serve. He was a faithful member of the Monday morning collection-sorting team at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, his longtime parish.
