Cecile Crozier Quarles was born on May 8, 1936, to Silas and Allie Mae Mobley Crozier in Lincoln County, Georgia and departed this life on May 18, 2025, at Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum, SC. Cecile came of age in the 1940s and '50s - a time when rock and roll was just beginning to take hold, movie stars dazzled on the silver screen, and big, fast cars were every young man's dream. In 1955, she married James E. Quarles, and not long after, the couple built a home on Jones Chapel Road, where Cecile would spend more than sixty years of her life. After James's passing, Cecile found companionship in a relationship with Claude Rhodes that lasted over two decades. Their life together was quiet and simple, though Claude delighted in taking her up in his small plane for day trips. Cecile was a familiar and beloved presence in her community. On warm days, neighbors and family knew just where to find her-sitting in her carport, shelling peas, picking out pecans, and gently rocking in one of the old chairs. Sundays were filled with laughter and love: homemade ice cream, family and friends, children zipping around on bikes and go-karts, and a sense of ease that seemed to drift from every bump on the
old dirt road. In her final years, Cecile lived at Mountain View Nursing Home in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where she was affectionately known by the staff as the "Boss Lady." Even as dementia took its toll, her caring nature remained unchanged. She often kept an eye on fellow residents, reminding staff to tie shoes, adjust blankets, and look after others-her servant's heart shining through until the very end. Cecile was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Quarles; her dear companion, Claude Rhodes; her son, James Thomas Quarles; her brother, Larry Dean Crozier; and many brothers and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Brady (Oren L. Brady III); her sister, Joyce Martin; her grandchildren: Mandy Sanger (Robbie), Melissa Hinton (Brett), Josh Wright (Trista), and James R. Quarles (Katherine); and her great-grandchildren: Bryson Quarles, R.J. Sanger, Kashton Sanger, Gage Hinton, Lacy Hinton, Henry Wright, J.R. Quarles, Ashlynn Quarles, Illah Sanger, and Ralph Wright. Cecile is also survived by special kids raised for several years in the home, Claude McKellar (Nancy) and Earl McKellar (Susan). The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Rees Funeral Home followed at 1:00 p.m. by a Celebration of Life Tribute from the graveside with Rev.
