Fairfield - Cecile Marie (Poulin) Vigue, age 102, died on August 9, 2025, at home in Fairfield. Cecile was born in St. Theophile, P.Q., Canada on September 26, 1922. She was a daughter of Romain and Exilia Poulin. She moved to Waterville in 1926 and was educated in local schools, receiving her G.E.D from Waterville High School. She was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. She was a stay-at-home mother, while her children were young, and once her children were in school, she worked at Butler's department store and at the Chi-Rho Shoppe. She also worked filing pistol grips for the War Department in 1941 - 1942 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Cecile enjoyed many local activities, including volunteering for over 20 years at Maine General. She was active in the local Catholic parish and was president of the Ladies of Saint Anne. She sang in the Sacred Heart choir for many years. She enjoyed weekly bridge games with many dear friends. She knitted for the Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers and provided hundreds of pairs of mittens and hats for their Christmas program. She also knitted infant hats to send to Kenya after her granddaughter, Dr. Rachel Mason, went on a volunteer trip to work in a hospital there. Cecile participated in the French language revitalization in Maine, first with Waterville High School film students and later with Colby College film students who made a movie called "Reveille - Waking up French," including Cecile and Alcée. She attended French language conversation groups, both at Jorgensen's and Muskie Center. She and her husband traveled to many states and countries enjoying ship reunions for the U.S.S. Hyman with lifelong friends. She enjoyed family reunions, and she loved and was loved by her devoted immediate and extended family. One of her very favorite words of wisdom was that "a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet." She was predeceased by her husband of 74 years Alcée, her parents, two sisters, Rita Rowe and Jeannine Delaware, brother Martin, a daughter Laurette Marie, who died at birth, one grandson, Peter Mason, and one son-in-law, Richard Mason. She is survived by four children, Jeanne Mason, Robert (Nancy Haskell), Patricia (Bruce Bolduc), Thomas (Eileen Fingerman), 10 grandchildren, Chuck, David, Paul, Amy, and Rachel Mason, Jeff and Joseph Vigue, Kevin and Katie Bolduc, and Kira Vigue. She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. No words are sufficient to thank family and friends who were so helpful and loving to Cecile throughout her last months. All staff members at Maine General Home Care and Hospice were dedicated and loving. We cannot thank them enough. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm Street, Waterville. An online guestbook may be signed; condolences and memories shared at www.gallantfh.com.
